IMAGERY
- The Selfie. Scene Kids were big fans of the selfie as we know it today. This could be representative of not just teen culture, but the Scene subculture specifically being so fixed on individual expression.
- High and/or Distant Angles. Emphasis is placed on the full outfit, as fashion is a huge part of the subculture
- Beloved Characters and Items. Cartoon character posters or plushies, including Invader Zim, Pikachu, Gloomy Bear, and Hello Kitty. Other popular items from the scene subculture often make an appearance, such as Monster Energy drinks.
- Advertising One's MySpace. As one had the chance for achieving internet virality with their selfies, they couldn't miss an opportunity to connect potential viewers to their MySpace account. I talk more about this phenomenon on my blog titled "The Media Theory of Scene Kids."
LANGUAGE
- Rawr and Other "Randomness." In embodying the “random” image, Scene Kids would frequently use this phrase and others like it. “Rawr means I love you in Dinosaur” was a popular line featured on shirts and merchandise. Often used today ironically to poke fun at Scene Kids.
- XD. Scene kids were frequent users of keyboard emoticons, the predecessors to our present day emojis. Popular faces included XD, ;P, B), :/, and O_o. Replacing letters with corresponding numbers and symbols was also popular, as was speaking in shorthand, r3sult1ng 1n t3xt th4t l00k3d sumth1ng l1k3 th1s.
- Kandi and Racoon Tails. Scene Kids frequently made terms for their unique trends and styles. Kandi is a term to refer to the brightly colored and heavily beaded jewelry worn by Scene Kids. Raccoon tail refers to pieces of colorful, horizontally striped hair.
