The Origins and Overview of Scene

  • The term “scene” originated in the early 2000s, with many who were members of the community citing the year 2002 specifically
  • Derived from emo and hardcore music scenes
    • People gathered at “the scene,” “They were on the scene”
  • “Scene Queen” began as a negative term for popular and attractive girls who were thought to be pretending to be interested in hardcore for the aesthetic
  • While inspired by the emo subculture, scene departs from some distinct emo characteristics
    • Some identify themselves or the subculture as “happy emos”
  • Inspiration from rave and Harajuku-based subcultures as well
  • Took off as a community via MySpace in the early 2000s
  • In summary, scene is a subculture tied together through shared music, fashion, public figures, and, originally, the use of early social media platform
