Flying through random pet projects for a while now. I set up OpenVAS and Invidious with little challenge, if you don't count discovering that Invidious doesn't play well with RHEL. The project could use a few features I still need to suggest on the Github track. I'd say I'd code/submit them, but that would be a horrible thing to do with such a nice project.
Currently working on a home phone system based on MagicJack, Cisco Callmanager, and Unity Connection. It's a bit like using a P&H LeTourneau L-2350 Loader to dig a garden plot, also a bit like putting pumptruck tires on an F1 car, but I have my reasons. Mostly work-related ones.
I took a break from random server nonsense to poke my head into Qubes for a while. It's a platform for secure communications and workflow segregation. I was pretty happy with it, though my attempts to make it more-friendly/less-secure were mostly met with failure. Did you know you can't install VMWare tools on a Linux system with Xen VM kernel, inside a VMWare VM? Not that anyone should actually do that, but I was trying because I'm a troubled soul.
I upgraded my VM server a while back. Lots of spare cores now. Also upgraded my desktop. It no longer freezes when booting from cold! Turns out the motherboard was dying. I need to go back to that at some point and see if it can be salvaged. Currently waiting for a UPS supplier to get back to me when their stock is back in.. stock. I really need to get my servers on a battery backup so I don't have them all go down any time the power flickers. If I'm lucky that will only set me back $700.
Past that upgrade the next one is storage for the file server. I'm not looking forward to that. It's probably going to set me back north of $1000 in hard drives.
And once that's done.. I don't know. There were other upgrades in the pipes. A home surveillance camera system would be a good idea. SSDs for the VM server would be pretty sweet. Oh; 10GbE networking. I think that's everything I have on the list for now. All of those upgrades, with the exception of the cameras, are probably also $1000 a piece. At least they're round numbers..
Busy busy.
Entity.
