🎬 The New 52: Booksmart

My goal is to watch 52 movies I've never seen this year. That averages to about one a week. This blog will chronicle what I watch and some short thoughts about it.

Movie #1: Booksmart

On the eve of their high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night.

As someone who never had the luxury of having crazy high school parties for a myriad of different reasons, including "being a Christian" and "being a dork," I didn't think this movie would resonate too well with me, but the endearing overachievers trying their best to balance being themselves with living life to its fullest made me cheer them on in a commiserative way. I thought the first 20 minutes of the movie actually elapsed for about three times as long, but it never felt like too much of a drag. Kaitlyn Dever's performance was absolutely outstanding, and neither her nor costar Beanie Feldstein ever felt like one or the other played second-fiddle in their ability to take reigns of the action.

Booksmart is basically Superbad but for the Gen Z crowd. And phrasing it like that immediately made my back hurt and reminded me to take my fiber supplement.

I'd watch Booksmart again if I wanted to watch something funny but emotional without being too heavy.
