Absolutely, lapfox was and is still a total production powerhouse. Iconic fandom music. I don't keep up with them like I used to but still check in from time to time to see whats new. Crazy how they outlasted just about every other fandom musician.
Heh. Clearly you and me both. As you know, Things are very different now. Not for the best IMO. It's like when some old hat talks about how X was better back in their day. Only i'm feeling that in my late 20s! Things move quick now that every 6 year old has an iPad ey?
Side babble - There's a surprising # of worth while artists on bandcamp though! just a little hard to find. Check out F0x3r - Neon rain, Algorithm Dude - ABSOLUTE EARRAPE 99999 (very lapfox like) Tenkitsune, Yiffo and The Rodinians are a few more modern furry artists that there I pay attention to.
I think the big issue is the fandom's growth in the last decade has stemmed mostly from circles and sites like Twitter which actively promote toxic engagement, cancel culture, social justice, armchair activism, etc. The fandom used to be the icon for weird talking animal fanatics to come together without being shamed for their interests or quirks and make friends- I think the message "we're not that weird!!" was spread a bit too much and now the fandom has been normalized to the point where it's not really the place to go if you're *too* weird as much as it used to be. Thankfully, some places still embrace that older culture (more or less) like the older furry art sites (e.g. FA and such) but that culture seems to be fading away bit by bit- probably a generational thing, as you said. People who grew up with toxic social media platforms tend to stick with them, it seems.
Thank you for the recommendations! I'll definitely be giving them a listen, and if you want to chat anywhere outside of here, just let me know.
oh yeah, you get it lol. 100% agree, it was at one point an effort, hard or meant you would be "discriminated" against for being a furry. EG the anthrocon protests from 4chan at the time. Took balls to be a furry. Now its totally cool and megacorps cater to us.... acceptance is the cousin of death. entropy, take me back to when when it was a taboo. Only the strong joined at that point. All pitty points and sjw shit now. Hard to find people who would openly admit such things. Yer a real one :P
That makes me think, I wonder if the widespread hatred online created a sense of unity to the fandom? Perhaps when that hatred got quieter, the fandom didn't need each other, and they just navigated towards being trendy.
When I was growing up, I always wanted people to understand that I'm just a regular guy who just has weird interests, the vitriol made me uncomfortable. But at the same time, I didn't realize how much it gravitated me towards greater friends than I could ask for- I could be myself openly with them. Now, people don't give a shit if I'm a furry, but even with furry friends I meet, I feel like I have to be careful about being myself too much, just like any "normie" I'd meet in real life.
This was an interesting thread to read (even if I am a bit late to the party). I do agree the fandom has gone downhill for those reasons, though my overall opinion on it isn't as optimistic. Either way, I mostly stick to the people I've known for years and don't talk about furry stuff in public very often since I prefer to find other common interests which I commonly associate with people who I can more easily connect with. Things like obscure video games or modding. I stay off the deep end of furry Twitter
I completely agree- I mostly just make friends through common interests in video games nowadays, rather than furry chat rooms, forums and art sites. It just isn't appealing the same way it used to be I guess?
