Prompt: What if a bookkeeper came across a friendly ghost? (Flash Fiction)

Darce and the Ghost

Part of ‘The Planar’ lore

Flash fiction

Today was the biggest day of her life. Being ridden with a magical-inflicted disease from a young age meant losing her legs’ mobility at a young age of 20. She endured many hardships because of this.

Sitting on the wooden stool behind her desk, she marked down the returned books for the day and those not yet returned in her store’s logbook. It was just after the evening rush of activity, and being in a city of scholars meant even her small bookshop earned attention.

Ding-a-ling!

The sound of a bell ringing let her slam the logbook closed, and adorn her award-winning smile.

“Mister Katherty, how lovely to meet you! Umm…”, nervously she cast a glance around the room and continued, “was it accepted?”.

His sincere grin was all she needed to exhale in relief.

“Miss Wrent, indeed the gods look upon you favourably.” He then motioned towards the door and called someone in, “Come, no need to be shy! You’ll be working here after all.”

Floating through the door was a slightly transparent figure of a boy, who immediately bowed and placed his hand to hold steady the flat cap adorning his head.

“I-I’m from the S-Spectral Aid Agency Ma’am, ready to serve!”

It was the help she requested a few months back. Spectral beings were praised to be helpful both in mind and body for those with disabilities.

She couldn’t help but share a passion filled grin to the young spectral boy who would be helping around her store from now on.
