i went to a drowning pool concert in my town recently and i had the time of my life. i never anticipated the amount of rules that older metalheads had in place until i met a guy named gavin- the guy who helped me out. he explained how mosh pits worked to me and how the social climate was at shows. i wasn't exactly sober but the rules were simple enough.
1: weak people went to the front, up and away from the chaos of the mosh pit. there was a lady with a walker at the concert, and she couldn't be near the pit for very obvious reasons- so the crowd parted and everyone let her through and made sure she was safe.
2: don't actively try to hurt people in the pit. no kicking, no punching. people are trying to have fun and not get hurt.
3: always help people who fall in the mosh pit. they could get hurt, so just grab one of their arms and help them up.
4: if you are at the edge of the mosh pit, it is your responsibility to shove people back into the pit and keep a steady boundary- because you will get shoved. a lot.
5: have fun and be engaging! it's a fun environment- have a good time.
that's all i learned at the concert. let me know if i missed anything, and i hope i helped someone out before their first show. :)
