culture shock

coming back to old web after a decade-plus has been a real trip for me, and had been reminding me how lonely the old web was, because it didnt give people incentive or reminders to interact with you. nobody owed you that, nor did you owe them.

now that im older I can enjoy the solitude. its a different kind here, I'm sure many of you remember agonizing over double-messaging and messaging first on AIM, and other such perceived social faux pas. i dont miss that, but when the web starts to feel close, it starts to feel like it has power over you. which, imo, is still better than the power it has over you when it doesn't feel close. god knows facebook had us all in a chokehold in 2009.

still, i have always felt like a floating island in the starry sky of web communities, and i imagine ill stay that way, but, the idea of staying somewhere and being important there? it has its charm. i can only hope to create something worth anchoring in its own place in the sky, creating its own field of orbit.

i think the problem with newer social medias (especiallyyyyy tiktok) is that since theres 100s of millions of people in the same online space, its impossible to feel like a community
whereas this site feels private enough that random people i know from highschool wont find my page but communal enough that its comforting

and ultimately apps like tiktoks goals are to make money, so they want people to be as addicted to the app as possible, and have no time to think when youre in that space

they need that power over us and our brains, they need power and control over our self esteem, mental health, attention span, etc. so we keep coming back for more and can never truely be satisfied.
theyre basically relying on the low self esteem of young people to make money, its so gross

its true, but as someone who has had some really negative online experiences on the old web, the comfort of that distance tiktok has can be alluring! making a profile here felt like walking into a party unaccompanied, then you open a door and there's just 10,000 13 year-olds.

hmm i guess i never experienced the old web so this is pretty fresh to me

it feels the opposite to me, tiktok makes me feel old and im only 22 lmao

i find tiktok to be pretty open personally, because the algorithm will show my videos to people who i dont want to see them
