Spacehey works on 2000’s Macs, But pretty poorly

On the 28th of August, support for older browsers was rolled out on Spacehey. Being able to view the site on computers from the days of early Myspace is quite a cool idea. The announcement only specified “older versions of Internet Explorer” so I was curious to see what would happen if I took my Summer 2001 iMac back on the web  to Spacehey.

I am running the latest update of OS X Panther, released in 2005 and the browser Camino, version 1.6.11, which is the latest browser for the OS releasing in 2010. Back in the day, this machine would have been able to browse Myspace quite nicely. Typing in the address I am hit with my first security protocol error, telling me that I was unable to connect to Tibush Labs. This error kept on showing up every time I entered a new page, which made it incredibly irritating to browse the site.

I was able to login without much issue, but the site looks a bit screwy, my guess is that An’s using CSS3 + HTML5 to keep the top navigation bar on top, leaving it to look a bit… broken. I could read peoples bulletins fine, but here comes another issue: imbedding Youtube content causes the load time on the page to take over several minutes. Due to the age of the browser, the content does not even load. The Spacehey logo also does not show up, due to it being SVG.

Posting blogs and bulletins is another story, however. The WYSIWYG editor does not display and the button to switch to HTML does not function. This means it is impossible to post images (besides your profile picture), change text color and size, use blink text and more. The rest of the issues are tolerable, but this breaks a huge function of the site. (http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/09/09/Text-Edit-Error.gif)

Moving onto user profiles, this is where Youtube imbeds and JS started to rear it’s ugly head. On some users pages, depending on how many videos they had imbedded, it took up to 5 minutes to load! My iMac is connected to 10mbps Ethernet, so this is the overhead of Youtube’s servers. Ignoring this load time, users profiles look a bit orange. Seriously! The code making the tables orange is broken on these older browsers, causing the color to spread like some strange Internet amoeba.  Editing my profile on Panther, however was a breeze. Due to the text editor automatically defaulting to HTML there was no problem changing some colors. All and all, I love the idea behind this. The idea behind it fits in with sites like Cornica.org but its execution could use a lot of work. I am looking forward for this to be amazing in the near future. TL:DR YOOOOO THIS IS SO FUCKING COOL IT KINDA IS CHEEKS AT TIMES THO BUT STILL LETS GOOOOOOO THANK YOU \m/
