The false idols of otherkin

This is part of a series of posts about the concept of kin and its history. For a more comprehensive explanation of what kin is, check here. A glossary is also included at the bottom for convenience, as not all terms are immediately explained. Most of this was written on 26 Mar, 2022, but was posted 27 Mar, 2022.

It was last updated on 05 Aug, 2024.
What changed: Unlisted entry. Keeping up for posterity, but I can't imagine this is any good.

There is a type of 'kin known as a celestial, or celestialkin. These people believe themselves to be some sort of 'higher being', feeling connected to outer space and the fabric of the cosmos itself. There are a handful of similar kintypes such as alienkin or spacekin, but today's target is divinekin.

Divinekin are generally considered part of the celestial subgroup and believe themselves to be of holy origin. There are two subtypes of divinekin*, being godkin/deitykin and angelkin. Godkin believe themselves to be reincarnations of a deity (be it the Abrahamic God or a deity from a pantheon). Angelkin has a broader definition - it ranges from feeling spiritually connected to angels, to being an angel in a temporary human host.
*It should be noted 'divinekin' is usually reserved for godkin/deitykin.

The term 'angel' is generally reserved for an Abrahamic context, however it appears the term angelkin applies to 'pagan angels', as well as any nonspecific or atheistic* angels. I am not aware of angels existing outside of the Abrahamic religions - while the concept of an angel (a messenger of a deity) exists in multiple religions, the term angel is not interchangeable with this.
*'Atheistic' in this context meaning not serving any specific deity. Not quite sure how that works, but OK.

The otherkin wikia/fandom page goes into each branch or choir of the Abrahamic hierarchy, describing how one could figure out what kind of angel they are. Thankfully, they seem to note that this is specific to the Abrahamic religions - confusingly, they also state that not every Abrahamic angel belongs or fits into this hierarchy.

Godkin are a bit different. From my own observation, they often believe themselves to be a deity not of this world or in any work of fiction. However, many do appear to come with a god complex, and/or demand others worship them. Some do genuinely believe themselves to be the one Abrahamic God, or will claim to be someone of Greek mythos. Both of these are quite disrespectful - they are not worshipping you, the 'kin, they are worshipping the deity (or deities) of their faith. There is at least one case of someone claiming to be kin with a Greek deity and going after people who are not anywhere near the otherkin community.

It's a good idea to avoid considering yourself kin with (or 'kinning') any deity that is of this Earth. A lot of older, lesser-worshipped deities are starting to be worshipped in bigger numbers (such an example is the Slavic pagan deities), so I can't reasonably call those 'safe' to be kin with. The same applies to angels - they do not exist outside of an Abrahamic context, and are an extension of God's will. You should not be claiming to be an extension of His will. If you truly feel this way, there may be something else going on.

There's another term known as 'godshard' which means that you aren't the deity you claim to be in its entirety, but just a shard of them. This is... slightly more sane than godkin, but I'm not too sure how I feel about it.

As with every 'kin community, there is always going to be at least one big drama that puts a strain or leaves a stain on the community. In the case of the angelkin community, this manifested as i-am-real-i-am-alive - a Tumblr user who claimed to be a shard of the one true Abrahamic God. With a few friends (only one named), they wreaked havoc on the community. I'm still looking into the event as there are mostly screenshots from what I'm seeing, but I'll either update here with more information or make another post for it specifically.

The most you need to know is that 'Jacob' had allegedly faked a suicide attempt, and apparently was playing around with folks that struggle with unreality issues (which makes sense, he was claiming to be God). Some people seem to look back on this event as a joke, and others seem to have been seriously affected by it. Personally I think this guy did a horrible job at pretending (Here's a taste).

It should be noted I don't often see fictionkin that are kin with fictional deities or angels calling themselves any form of divinekin - it seems the label rests mostly within otherkin.
