The 1800's marks the century where men's fashion mellows down from the once extraordinaire to the outfits of what we see more today. The 1700's left the men's heels, capes, robes, and attire we would describe as peculiar today, and the 19th century brought two pieces, function over fashion, cravats, although still worn, slowly being replaced by the ties and bow ties we know in the modern age. The industrial revolution no doubt played a part, but still, Men's fashion would simmer down while woman's fashion still upheld most of the standards of past-wear. (Of course still revolutionizing in their own ways, its easy to tell the differences in women's fashion through the ages, but more modernizing than dressing down as I would describe men's wear.) Even so, I would say the mid to late 1800's is my favourite time in men's fashion.
Its definitely dogmatic to say this time was the best for men's fashion, but I will do so anyways. Tailcoats, although more common in the early 1800's, is my favourite piece in this time period. They give off such allure, shaping the figure in all the right ways, but also having that dramatic grandeur from the tails catching the wind or being hastily flicked away from the body to sit.
The lounge suit was developed in the mid 1800's, about 1850, and brought the suit that we basically know today into the limelight. A garment meant for casual outdoor occasions, it is still the blueprint for the suits made today. Can you imagine going out for a casual day of lawn sports in a full suit?
Although tailcoats are my favourite (So much so I added them to my everyday wear) The pinstripe suit and vest is of course a close second, the outfit of what I would describe as an old fashioned gentleman. Both very solid outfits choices, and I think I would fall instantly in love if I saw a man of this era donning either, lmao.
The fashion of the 1800's have always called to me, and so I strive to have as much period accurate clothing as possible. I understand I might look odd, a woman wearing such things for seemingly no reason, I mean, who wears a tailcoat to the local walmart? But I don't particularly care, I enjoy it, I feel great in my tailcoat, and I continue to adore the fashions of this time period- in researching, my clothing,
and my art :)
I'm not done with it, but I'm sure you get the gist of what I'm going for :)
