i need to stop making things and not finishing them!!

SO, I really like making things. I have a lot of hobbies related to creating stuff. The problem is I make things and then I get an idea to make another thing and I don't finish the first thing and this has gone on for a while and now I'm left with so many unfinished projects and it's overwhelming. I don't want to abandon my half finished projects because I put a lot of time into them and I think they final product will be good if I actually finished it. I realized this problem a while ago and I said to myself hey just stop making new things and work on your old things but for the life of me I couldn't! I think the most obvious solution would be to make a list of everything I need to finish and when I get bored of one project I go back to something old instead of starting something new, but that list would probably have at least 100 things on it, and I don't think I would have the self control to not make anything new in the time it would take to get through everything on the list.

so like basically brain making ideas for things faster than I can make the things
Anybody else have this problem? Any advice

It sounds like you're maximizing the scope of your projects too much, I used to do that with game development. I'd start up a new project, work on it for a few months, and then completely abandon it over and over again until April last year when I participated in my first game jam.

Jams force you to set small goals for your projects since they give you have little time to complete them, so by minimizing the scope of my project, I was able to finish it in a few days which felt infinitely more satisfying than working on something for months just to throw it away completely. Plus, when you finish a bunch of small projects, you become more and more capable of completing larger ones.

thanks! yeah sometimes ill say like "im going to finish this drawing today and if i dont finish it then thats the end of it" and then i get it done and i feel good for finishing something. like not every decent sketch has to be fully fleshed out, it can just stay a sketch. it was practice. practice is good.

perhaps .. .perhaps idea hopping stems from not seeing expected results from the start , so you move to another thing subconsciously thinking you will create a better THING . make ugly things, love your ugly things =)
