What I've Been Reading Lately (March 2022)

So the first quarter of the year absolutely flew by. Here are some of the books I've been reading lately, as well as a list of books I have on the shelf to read soon.

Some of the stuff here is queer-oriented (mostly lesbian) YA novels. My step-niece-in-law came out recently and I got a whole stack of books to give her the next time I see her, and obviously I'm going to read them first because the gay 13 year old I once was won't be able to finally rest in peace if I don't.

Gonna be honest, I started this the week it came out and then I got really busy with work and helping out some family members and I'm completely lost in the plot and have to start over. It's pretty good, there's just a lot of characters so it's one of those you need to read all in the same week or you're going to lose bits

Gay revenge arson. I need not say more.

Actually I do. It's the guy's first book so it's a little rough around the edges, and definitely something a lot of people might think of as a "pulp piece," but I loved it. Maybe it's just because I'm a gay with criminal yearnings, but it actually had me thinking for days after about how easy it is to sell ourselves a narrative that what we're doing is right, even if it, like, objectively is not.

Lesbian necromancer lobotomy in space. God and The Saints fight a Big Space Monster. Bees made of fingers. This book has it all.

Really interesting book concept that's hard to explain without spoiling the plot. Monsters, structural oppression, and leftism. Definitely worth a read because I don't think I've seen a more on point metaphor for structural homophobia/transphobia/racism in a while.

Okay so this actually had me crying in bed at like 1am because
  1. My mental stability declines the more tired I get
  2. It was a brilliant fucking book
Genuinely one of my favorite things I've read in a while. The author's style is very easy to read, the characters are very alive and realistic, and I generally just cannot get over how moving the entire story is. It really nails how sharing your identity isn't nearly so much "coming out" as it is letting others in.

Short, but so far really good. Excited to read further and see where this goes.

Yes, I can read two books at once. This is another queer YA book I'm working through before handing them off to my step niece. The subject matter is kinda heavy, but in a good way. I'm about 1/4 of the way through and really liking it. Difficult parent-child relationship dynamics. Mental illness. Financial troubles. Hard at times, but a good read so far.

I hope none of you expected straight titles in here (there are but w/e). I really do hope none of you were foolish enough to think that. A story about being gay? In the south? Thank you. Also one of my great grandparents was a Sessums from Mississippi so I feel drawn to this like a moth to a floodlight.

The plot sounds really good, and I'm a sucker for anything written about contemporary gay culture circa the 1990's.

A bit more academic. I'm trying to dip my toe into more queer theory type books this year. Something about being a few years divorced from academia has let me recover some of my mental strength so I feel ready to take on some heavier topics

There are a few others, but this list is getting kind of long so I'm going to wrap it up here. There's a solid chance I might update this tomorrow, I know I read like two other books but I'm completely blanking because it's my bedtime and when you reach a certain age your body demands consistency and routine or else.
