children falling

i just witnessed a child falling off a bike, typically i find it funny however i found it quite sad bcuz the child was visibly upset. I turned to ladislav to communicate my confusion in these emotions to which he replied he doesn't find it funny he finds it pathetic to which i then chuckled. are children over coddled nowadays? should we expect them to be fully autonomous functioning members of society or is that our little capitalist brains dictating worth through their efficiency and effectiveness? however when we look at other animals and how long they stay with their mothers etc it is way less. is this an evolutionary advantage or disadvantage? animals however do not have to learn more complex social skills etc so is this why we stay much longer with our parents? is it love? is there anyone there?
