To start off with, here's the lyrics that we'll be analysing. As well as the link to the song here. Today, I'll be trying my best to take a look at the subject matter and some trivia if I can find it! Note: because I'm not Bruno Major, please don't take these interpretations as factual!
Bruno Major – Nothing
Track suits and red wine
Movies for two
We'll take off our phones
And we'll turn off our shoes
We'll play Nintendo
Though I always lose
'Cause you'll watch the TV
While I'm watching you
There's not many people
I'd honestly say
I don't mind losing to
But there's nothing
Like doing nothing
With you
Dumb conversations
We lose track of time
Have I told you lately
I'm grateful you're mine
We'll watch The Notebook
For the 17th time
I'll say "It's stupid"
Then you'll catch me crying
We're not making out
On a boat in the rain
Or in a house I've painted blue
But there's nothing
Like doing nothing
With you
So shut all the windows
And lock all the doors
We're not looking for no one
Don't need nothing more
You'll bite my lip and
I'll want you more
Until we end up in a heap on the floor
Mmm
You could be dancing on tabletops
Wearing high-heels
Drinking until the world
Spins like a wheel
But tonight your apartment
Had so much appeal
Who needs stars?
We've got a roof
But there's nothing
Like doing nothing
With you
Mmm
No, there's nothing
Like doing nothing
With you
Right off the bat, I noticed how nice the rhyme scheme of this song is. Because there's a mixture of rhyme and non-rhyme, each verse flows really eloquently into the next. I love that.
Track suits and red wine
Movies for two
Straight away, Mr Major starts off with telling us what the song is about. "Track suits" paired with "red wine" shows Major's personality, how he isn't afraid to be himself while doing something fancy, no? Also, it shows that he and his partner are hanging out at home too! :)) While the movies for two line refers to the situation he's singing about. Him and his partner. Simple love. Super nice and sets up the song excellently!
We'll take off our phones
And we'll turn off our shoes
We'll play Nintendo
Though I always lose
Oh man, I love the rhyming here. Wowowowow. We have a classic AABA pattern here, which really flows well. Plus, it shows the comfortableness that Major has with his partner! He and his partner are relaxed around one-another and don't mind spending time together. Even if Major always loses.
Some trivia here, is that the original progression sounds like Mario! Which Major addressed on twitter. Have a look at his explanation!
'Cause you'll watch the TV
While I'm watching you
Love this :)) Infatuation with who you love.
There's not many peopleI'd honestly say
I don't mind losing to
But there's nothing
Like doing nothing
With you
What a lovely chorus. Plus, it just has such a quaint vibe to it. There's nothing like doing nothing with the person you love. Time becomes irrelevant here.
I'm going to skip a little ahead, but lemme just say that Bruno is a masterful storyteller. His use of external language (the stuff you feel, see, hear, etc) and internal (what you think) is so creative and blends extremely well!
So shut all the windows
And lock all the doors
We're not looking for no one
Don't need nothing more
You'll bite my lip and
I'll want you more
Until we end up in a heap on the floor
Mmm
I want to quickly talk about this verse, and how it shows the differences between external and internal. "shut all the windows" "lock all the doors" while first off, the rhyme! So good, I love it. Second, is this is external language. As it shows the outside world, like he's saying "I want nothing but you today". "You'll bite my lip" is also external, as it engages our senses :) "I'll want you more" is internal, as its Bruno's thoughts bleeding into the lyrics.
Suffice to say, I love this song, and I'm so, super glad, that I can write about song analysis and gush about artist's work. Hope to see you next time!
