What you crave is what your body needs?

Throughout my life, I have heard people say that if you crave something, it means that your body is deficient in a vitamin or mineral that the food you are craving has. I always had a problem believing this for a couple of reasons.
1. If that was true, everyone would be eating healthy.
2. Our flesh always craves things that are not good for us.
But, I never actually looked into this theory to see if it was actually true or not. It turns out that while there are many physical and psychological reasons why we crave certain foods (Which I always knew the psychological reasons), one of them is not that our body needs them.
I did find out something though. There is a craving that people can get that indicates that their body may be low on a vitamin or mineral. That craving is oddly enough for NON-FOOD items. This condition is called, pica and it occurs mostly in children and pregnant women who are low on iron, calcium, or zinc.
So, if you are craving food, it is likely because you are pregnant, have PMS, tired, not eating enough protein and fiber are therefore hungry all the time, not drinking enough water, poor gut health, not getting enough exercise, eating too much processed foods, or it may be psychological such as stress or addiction. Now if you are craving Tide Pods, you may be lacking an important nutrient ... or just a crazy teen. lol
