Hm, well it would seem that historically hating things is very cool to people whether they actively think so or not. And hating what's not the norm is rather easy. Liking the opposite sex is the norm, being gay isn't. So it was easy prey for hate. Same with race, cliques, religion, etc. It sucks, yeah? But thaaaaat's people for you.
I will say that it's not good to stoke the flames of hate in people, provoking the hateful folks has never really worked out for anyone. Stubbornness is also a very human trait, it's hard to make people feel different about something that they hate especially with confrontation.
