Mixdown for the 8th album has begun. This is very exciting for sure. I never thought I would still feel this rush of excitement at my age. Am I supposed to mellow out, wear polo shirts and talk about pretentious crap at a country club?
Nah, I don't do mundane very well.
I went to Dingbatz in Clifton this past Friday to see some bands and knew that Mike Sabatini would be there. What I didn't expect was him to say "Check this out, here's a rough mix of the first song." He played it on his phone! And the weird part? I could hear EVERY detail, even the little bass fills and "gnat notes" (as Zappa would call them) on a tiny speaker!! He said that if the music sounds good on a small phone speaker, then it will sound good everywhere else. The clarity was stunning. Mike is taking his time with the mixing which is fine with me. I can tell that this album is going to sound amazing.
Will I say it's my best album? No because that's dangerous. Any band who says "This is our best" is because they are happy to talk about something new and of course it sounds fresh and exciting. Each of my albums have a uniqueness to them, no two sound alike. This one is going to be another head-turner, I can feel it. Mike really added a lot of heaviness and power with his drumming, and Jon Hanemann really helped with getting the best tones possible, swapping pedals and moving a knob here and there ever so slightly. Whatever it took to get the job done, we did it.
Am I still allowed to feel like a kid on Xmas morning?
Yes!
