Youtube horror series have always been a thing, and have since evolved to adopt new popular styles. Back in the early days, a lot of them utilized some found footage premises and a lot of them still do. But in recent days we've seen a lot of analog horror elements that act more as if you're watching some sort of official content fed to you by an organization or company. I feel like over recent years especially I've found I prefer this type of storytelling more than I do actual horror movies in the theaters. A ton of modern day horror movies do tend to rely a bit on jump scares, or the acting makes them fall flat. Terrifier is one of my favorites, but in the end I didn't watch it so often because the movie scared me, but because I considered it a beautiful piece of art in the sense of the gore makeup and the main villains acting; but the story ends up feeling out of no where. Youtube is where a ton of content creators with stories they want to portray in a certain way can do that with far less restraint than if they were to make an actual film out of it. If a creator thinks a disfigured face at 3 minutes into their video is creepier than a jumpscare, chances are it is at least in my experience. If they want some horribly eerie and garbled audio design that's practically intelligible or monotone, I feel like it comes across better than something with horror music playing over it. I feel like it's such a nice storytelling form, and can really make stories feel more immersive. Then again, to each their own. Anyone have any opinions on YT horror?
