The Murder Of Adrienne Shelly

Adrienne Shelly was an American Actress from Queens, New York. She wrote & directed the film Waitress which would later become a famous Broadway Show. 

( you guys probably know a song from the show written by Sara Bareilles called When He Sees Me. It was a trending song on TikTok in early 2021 ) 

Although, many people don’t even know Adrienne Shelly wrote Waitress, I think it's important to know where it came from. 

On November 1, 2006, Adrienne was found hanging in the shower of her apartment by her husband, Andy Ostroy, it was quickly ruled as a suicide. However, Adrienne’s husband was determined that Adrienne would never take her own life because her life was heading in the direction she had always wanted and they had a 3 year old daughter together, Sophie. Investigators finally decided to do their job & they found a shoe print that didn’t belong to Adrienne. They arrested the man who matched the shoe print, a 19 year old construction worker who had been working in Adrienne’s apartment complex named Diego Pillco from Ecuador. He had confessed to investigators that he killed Adrienne and made it out to look like a suicide. Diego had fled from Ecuador to the U.S. & was in $12,000 debt, he worked in construction to help pay his debt. Diego had 2 stories about what happened to Adrienne, the first one was that Adrienne complained about the noise coming from the construction, so he picked a fight with Adrienne and killed her, the second was that he got close to Adrienne’s apartment the door easily opened and he saw her purse, he was afraid to get caught but he was determined to steal the money in her purse. When Adrienne spotted Diego, he claimed she started screaming "I'm going to call the police." & got so scared that he just wanted to keep her quiet, so he grabbed hr and choked her with one hand until he noticed she went blue and realized he had killed her. He then dragged Adrienne to the bathroom and fashioned a noose from her bedsheet, and hung her from her shower curtain rail to make it look like she had taken her own life.

Diego Pillco was sentenced to 25 years in prison on March 6th, 2008. He will be released when he's 45.
