A certain hunger review

A certain hunger takes a deep dive into carnal desires from the close, first-person narration of a diagnosed psychopath. It is a sensual meta-fiction full of nods and winks to its reader that will send a shiver down your spine. I've seen a lot of reviews comparing the text to American psycho, and i think that comparison is apt, if American psycho starred a modern Mrs. Lovett.

There's not much about this novel that isn't explicit, and for me, that was part of its charm. Weird to say, i know, but i think what a certain hunger offers through its story is an experiment in power and fantasy. It pushes every tiny human impulse, no matter how deviant, to an absurd and deplorable extent. It stretches the capacity to empathize with the darker parts of oneself.

This book is a surreal and wild thriller. It is a bloody and bawdy character study. It is entertaining and uncomfortable and not for the prudish. I had a lot of fun reading it. ;)
