My personal thoughts on Hayao Miyazaki's work on Ghibli films These are just my personal thoughts and opinions regarding Hayao Miyazakiś work on ghibli films, such as totoro, nausicaa valley of the wind, princess mononoke, spirited away, whisper of the heart, etc etc. I personally have been watching ghibli films since i was in elementary school and continue to be a huge fan of Miyazakiś work to this day. Maybe even a bigger fan than I was then. The way that he portrays his characters, and has them written so incredibly, will always be so impressive to me. The way that he writes his female characters especially, he writes them and treats them like actual human beings. He doesnt make them just damsels in distress, they have their problems, they're vulnerable, theyre emotional, theyŕe capable, they´re written like actual people. It's so rare for me to see any female characters in media that not only are written like actual people, but aren't based on any stereotypes, and in Miyazaki's films i can see that, which is so incredibly significant to viewers whether it is known to them or not. Because a lot of the time, people believe what they see in movies, they see someone act a certain way in movies and start to believe that they act in such ways in real life too. To see movies in which people are written as actual people, means so much to me. I'm also such a fan of how he portrays his messages, which aren't hard to spot in all of his films. Some of the reoccurring messages that can be found in his films would include something with an anti war message, feminism, and environmentalism. His work in his films can also mean so many more things to other people viewing his work. In his films, he adds these moments where nothing too significant to the plot happens, moments of calm and peace, moments that are truly beautiful, even if they only last a second. Not only does it throw less at the viewer regarding what's happening in said film, but it also makes the viewer see the beauty in the less significant moments in life (cleaning, cooking, etc…) The way that these moments, although not said to mean a lot, and yet still being able to make the audience see them and find beauty in ordinary things in their lives outside of watching Miyazakiś films is truly amazing. The audience can watch his movies, and think ¨ïtś great to be alive¨, which is something so beautiful to me. I feel like Miyazakiś's work in the movies that he has worked on has even made me appreciate the earth more than I knew I could. His work has made me feel a much more significant way about war than I had felt before. His work has made me feel more capable as a woman, as a person, without feeling stereotyped or judged, than any other films have made me feel. His work is so influential to me and I will always appreciate that, so much more than I could ever express.
