Got these questions from a bulletin Fr@nk tHe taNK posted and seeing as I was an avid MySpace user back in the day, I figured they would be the perfect way to relive those days.
What year did you stop using Myspace and why?
Probably around 2010 or thereabouts as their entire layout changed and as Facebook startedd taking over more and more.
What year did you join?
Sometime in the fall of 2005. It was the first social media I ever used.
Were all your friends on it?
None that I knew personally from before but I got a lot of new friends on it.
How old were you when you joined/used it?
24 if memory serves me right
If you were below 18 did your parents know about your myspace account? Did they allow it? Did they ever check it or have you added as a friend?
I was above 18 and my parents hadn't even heard of social media back then, their way of socializing digitally was through SMS and e-mail lmao. But when I did tell them about MySpace, they trusted I was old enough to know what I was doing.
Any Myspace drama like feuds over top 8 or any other interesting Myspace stories?
While I never experienced any top 8 drama myself, I did hear about others it happened to. Made me chuckle lol. I did have DM conversations with Debbie Loeb on there (singer, more info about her further below) and that is a very cool memory.
What was the thing you liked most about Myspace and the thing you hated the most?
The thing I liked the most was how I could customize my profile to match my personality and how I could switch up my profile's look depending on my mood. I also liked the blogging aspect, I blogged quite regularly and I wasn't happy when MySpace changed their site entirely, deleting all my blogs in the process.
When Facebook became popular what did you think of it? Did you immediately abandon Myspace and joined FB or joined FB when Myspace was past the point of no return?
I liked Facebook, mostly because all my friends and my family were on it and it's still the reason I'm on it today although the whole aspect of being Mark Zuckerberg's puppets and having our info potentially sold to companies does put me off from Facebook more and more. Hadn't it been for family and literally everyone from school etc being on there, I'd leave long ago.
How often did you use Myspace?
Pretty much on a daily basis, I would say. I quickly got addicted to it lol!
What was your myspace profile song?
I had many different songs through the years, but some that I really remember were "Why" by DJ Sammy (my first ever profile song) and "Faraway" by Debbie Loeb (Eurodance/EDM/Trance singer and sister of singer Lisa Loeb. Debbie was even in my top 8 and I was in her top 8 too)
Did you have an interesting layout or a plain profile?
I had everything from underwater layouts with fish, undersea plants and coralls on them, through more sci-fi type layouts to straight up rap/hip-hop layouts because I thought I was badass for a short period of time lmao!
Were you emo? Lol
No, I was more the typical Scandinavian/Nordic kind of everyday dude lol.
Why did you think Myspace failed?
I think once Facebook came along and had everyone, their cousin, uncle, mom, grandma and what have you, join en masse, it probably came to a point where MySpace saw that they couldn't keep up and no one was interested anymore. I remember myself MySpace being pretty much dead when Facebook was all the rage and I could leave comments on profiles and on pics where no one had commented for months or even years lol. The spamming, profile and account hacking and phishing MySpace fell subject to was also a contributing factor in its demise.
Did you have any other social media sites besides Myspace? (Not including Facebook)
I had Nettby, a Norwegian social networking site (the name means "net city") run and operated by VG, one of Norway's major newspapers and it was a lot of fun with various groups and such but ultimately it was closed due to perverted paedophiles hitting up underage girls on there.
Were you abnoxious? Like posting chain letter bulletins and doing other stupid shit.
No, I never really posted chain letters or did much other obnoxious stuff. I mostly posted blogs and uploaded photos.
Who was #1 on your top 8?
Aaron Carter (What was I thinking....dear lord lmfao. He was attractive and had his shit together back then which is why I had him on there but there is no way in hell I'd have him as a top 1 on my top 8 now lmao)
If Myspace had never changed it’s og style but most of your friends/people you knew still abandoned it in favour of Facebook would you have stayed on MySpace or joined Facebook or possibly have both sites?
I would've stayed most likely. Both of them would appeal to me differently just like I feel that SpaceHey and Facebook appeals to me differently today. I feel that they can co-exist.
What do you think Myspace had that is lacking in todays social media platforms?
Customization for sure. And the control of owning the stuff you post.
What are some things better about social media today than in the Myspace days?
With pretty much every social media having a smartphone app, it makes it easy to connect with people on the go and quickly share moments as they happen. Having that said, I prefer SpaceHey to stay a desktop site in order to feel as authentic and oldschool as possible. It can still be accessed through a smartphone despite not having an app, just use Safari and create a homescreen shortcut and it pretty much becomes an app :)
Were there any toxic aspects of Myspace that you remember? (besides top 8 drama) if you compare social media now vs then which did you find more toxic?
The phishing, hacking and spamming was a toxic thing that ended up ruining the fun for everyone, that's how I felt at least.
Do you remember your old MySpace account information? Were you able to log in? Do you have any embarrassing pictures on there still lingering around?
(Feel free to share links if you are comfortable sharing your photos)
I've since made a new MySpace but the new version is terrible, I can't even access my photos properly and the whole circles thing as a way to view your friends list on there is a total mess I just can't make sense of at all. I've looked up myspace.com/didrick that used to be my old URL but that URL has been taken by a Swedish dubstep DJ who happens to spell his name the same way I do. All I have as far as glimpses of my old profile are screenshots I took back then and they serve as nice memories of days long gone but wonderful days nonetheless.
If MySpace was still around in it’s original form do you think teens/young adults today would like it?
Some would probably find it old-fashioned but others again would probably join because they felt retro and wanted to relive the nostalgia, for the same reason many of us joined SpaceHey initially.
