I'm aware that it's been a while since my last little blogging frenzy. Maybe I just go through them in sporadic bursts but anyway, to kick start my first blog post in a while is the latest release from The Subways, Fight.
This band is quite special to me because I had never listened to them until I watched their set at Kendal Calling 2019. It was so impressive that I binged on their albums once I got home. From then on, I was hooked but also disappointed that I hadn't discovered them years earlier!
Their last album, The Subways was released in 2015, a larger gap in comparison to their previous albums so I was intrigued as to how they would sound with their new album 6 years down the line. I mean, a lot of bands and artists experiment and change their sound completely when they're a few albums in. Sometimes it's a hit and sometimes it can create a very divided opinion between fans (do I need to remind everyone about Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino?).
I'm not saying this because I have a lot of high regard for this band. I genuinely mean it when I say that this new single is fantastic. It might be short in length but it's feisty and powerful. I don't think they've made any significant differences to their sound which I'm happy with. Lyrically, there is no doubt that this track has incredibly relevant themes which I'm sure a lot of people will understand and relate to, especially in the current climate and twinned with passionate vocals, makes it all the more anthemic. My particular favourite was:
"And now we all stand up, join me and take a knee,
Say each and every name, of those who could not breathe."
If Fight is only the start then I can't wait to hear what's yet to come.
