needing some tips on prop making

i didn't know what this would be considered so i guess its art and photography xd

Ive been considering making a prop for a convention. Specifically, sayaka miki's sword. I was thinking about making it out of wood? I wanted to see if anyone had any tips or tricks for this since it's my first time trying it out. Anywayyy, thanks for reading :)
