Something that helps me out is by doing an artist study. You pick an artist, and try to copy a piece of theirs using their techniques. And then you make your own applying what you learnt.
Another thing you could do is fill a page with doodles and sketches whenever you're bored. Like do one sketch or doodle, maybe a couple, every so often. And then once your down you can pick a background colour, overlay the sketches onto it and use it as a background for a character sheet.
