Oof, applying to jobs sucks. I'm in the UK and it's not to hard to get hospitality work rn so I got lucky.
My advice for sewing is wash fabrics before you use them. I recently made a patch from red felt without doing this and it dyed the white thread pink in the wash.

Maybe get a cheap black jumper and stitch on the bones with wool? Idk if that would work out any cheaper
Maybe. Been applying to jobs but I doubt I'll get hired. Here in my tiny US college town everyone is "hiring" but not actually hiring ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'll see if I have something that could work when I go home for spring break. If not a sweater I'll probably have something black I can cut up and sew
