Welcome to R3:view a monthly blog where I discuss any new media (movies, series, manga, books youtube videos/channels some music perhaps) I've watched or discovered in the past month.
I guess as a disclaimer I'm not an expert on film or anything I just like watching movies and everything I say is just my own opinion.
We're going to start with the first month of the year January.
I watched Encanto very soon after it was released I hadn't heard anything about it just saw some ads so I had no concept of what it was going to be about at all. I watched it on an impulse on new years eve with my ma admittedly I wasn't paying too much attention since I kept getting distracted (and increasingly more tipsy) I liked it on first watch but thought I should watch it again on my own. I absolutely understand why it's become so beloved, I adored it after my second watch and might be one of the best disney pixar films I've seen in a long time.
What I enjoyed most is the total lack of "adventure" which sounds like a bad thing but I think it worked super well especially here were the central conflict remains mostly within the family characters and the setting stays within the village and la casita aside from flashbacks. And because of the nature of the characters gifts and the overall magical setting there isn't really a need to leave la casita. A lot of disney pixar films usually have that narrative of the main character going out to get something and they go on a big adventure to these interesting settings. It's nice to see a different structure sometimes.
This doesn't need to be said but all disney pixar films are visually stunning and beautiful to look at especially every scene isabella is in.
so yeah good movie.
This film is the staple "often misunderstood filmbro" movie that people often point to when we want to talk about movies for the sad lonely dude who enjoys film theory and stuff. There's nothing I can really say that some film youtuber hasn't already talked about. I will say I didn't necessarily enjoy the movie for it's social commentary or the violence I enjoyed it specifically because of Edward Norton's performance he's just super endearing.
I also have to admit that I was into it until like 15 minutes before the ending and then I just didn't finish it for a while? I'm not sure why. But I did complete it. Overall I did enjoy it but I don't think I'll ever go out of my way to watch it again.
I don't think I have much to say about this movie? I love watching Julia Roberts do stuff especially arguing with blue collar types in cute outfits so y'know what else can I say? The overall feeling I got afterwards was kind of bittersweet because I know this was based on a real story and person so a huge company fucking ordinary people over and putting them in harms way is very real and makes me sad and angry but they did get compensated in the end but this kind of stuff still happens and it's so upsetting.
So good movie?
Best movie I've seen so far this year and of January. It might be my favorite Brian de palma film too idk. It's an amazing glam rock campy 70's reimagining of the phantom of the opera (one of my favorite musicals) about music, artists and the industry. The music is great in this and there's a character called beef, and also rod sterling does the intro which is amazing like holy shit. If your into 70's movies you have to watch this. It can get a little gross and some things about it haven't aged well but overall It's super watchable and so much fun to watch. Go watch phantom of the paradise I beg of thee! Best movie.
I found this through youtube recommendations of compilation videos and thought it was interesting and I wasn't disappointed! I believe the act/concept is done by a theatre troupe/ production company called mischief screen or something similar?
They have a two tv series with they same concept using a made up theatre group at a university and act as these made up actors and their plays get all fucked up it's super funny even for me who rarely finds most comedy series/shows 'laugh out loud' funny.
(look at how happy they are :D)
I just rediscovered the original Japanese (sbs english dubbed) iron chef and have been watching some episodes lately I remember really enjoying it when I was young and it still holds up! even if the versions I could find weren't of great quality. If you like cooking shows get into it! There's also a kayfabe element to it which I find really fun.
Honorable mentions
Wierd n wild creatures
I was talking to a friend about mythical creatures and found this
wiki it seems to have been collectable cards/trading cards, the art is really cool and I love learning about deep sea creatures and mythical beings etc and I'm sure some kid out there loved that too when if they owned/saw any of those cards.
Mila tequila on yt
Found the
mila tequila youtube channel that talks about 00's moments she has this long video dedicated to
Britney spears eras (which as a Britney fan made me go nuts). and it's great would recommend if anyone's into that.
Thanks for reading! I really didn't watch much at all the past month hoping to watch some more stuff asap also I'm no writer or media critic by any means I just like talking abt stuff I like. Let me know your thoughts!
