Bojack horseman anylisis (pt1)

HI! Im super bored n idk what to do so im going to try and analyze Bojack horseman. I might do all episodes or just the ones i really like. This will be my like 10th time rewatching Bojack horseman. The genius of this show is amazing and it is just so insanely brilliant and you can see the hard work and effort that was put into this show. It really captures a lot of how the real world works.

TW // Drug abuse, death, talk about childhood trauma, talk about suicidal thoughts, nihilistic POVs, Spoilers for Bojack Horseman, SA, Pedophilia, Sex in general, Abuse

Intro: im just going to talk about my ideas on Bojack and what i feel it represents in the current day. I love Bojack. Not the horse but the show obvi. But i think this show is just so interesting. Between the personification of animals, the relations between Bojack and everyone in the show, and the way that t really represents so much within our real lives. I think one of the things that people love about this show is that it dosent (in general) sugarcoat life a lot. It is very raw. Instead of a happy ending for the main character, he goes to jail. And in its own way, That is great. Bojack can’t hurt anybody. He’s forced to be sober and clean now. He (most likely) won’t get in touch with the people he was in contact with before everything. I love Diane, i like PC, but They were not right for Bojack. Although it is all kind of Bojack’s fault considering it’s him who did all of it. We can’t fault any of them for not fixing him bc at the end of the day, it’s him. And even if he might be in recovery, you have to WANT to recover in order to recover which a lot of people dont understand. When you’re addicted to something and you like that thing, you probably know it’s not good for you but you keep doing it because you want to. The people in your life want you to stop and be better for yourself, and your surroundings. But no matter how much they push, you won’t listen bc you like that thing and “they dont get it”. And truthfully, they dont. They might send you to rehab to get better but The only thing you’re thinking ab is that thing. That one thing that you can get right back to as soon as you are out. And you make it your mission to get out asap to get back to that thing. Bc, you didnt want to recover. Same thing with mental health. To get better you have to acknowledge the problem and seek help. The help won’t work if you dont want to get better or even try. Similar to so much in Bojack.

I Love that you hate the characters but you also love them in a way. You can relate to Diane’s romanticization and fetishization of her own mental problems. You can relate to Bojack’s idea of “in the grand scheme of things, Nothing matters”. You can relate to PC’s Need to care and love for something that is your own. You can absolutely relate to Sara Lynn and her needs to feel love and validated. Her empty feeling when she wins an oscar. There is something for everyone in this show.

I also think it’s very interesting how they frame Beatrice. Beatrice is Bojack’s mother. The entire show were told that she is horrible (which she was). Were taught to hate her and we do. I didnt like her. But then they show her childhood. And her life. And you can’t help but feel terrible for her. You can relate to some of the stuff that  happened. You dont blame her for hating her life. You understand. But you also understand that She is a bad person. It was her responsibility to be the best person she could be, but was she set up for failure? One thing i love about movies and television in general that i dont think gets talked about is the POV. POVs are so important to the message you’re sending and who you want to be the good guy, and bad guy.

Take Batman for example. Batman is the good guy in all of these movies. He’s saving the world. You can relate to parts of his background. Then the joker. He’s the bad guy. He’s trying to destroy everything. After watching every batman movie, you hate the joker. You’re supposed to. He’s the conflict.

But then the joker movie comes out. You watch it, and you sympathize. A man whos been made fun of his whole life is dirt poor, never got what he needed. No wonder he wants to destroy the city. I would too. Now he’s the good guy and everyone else is the bad guy.

With Bojack, they show you almost everyone’s background and you get to know everyone.

This is getting long and i have a really bad wrist that tends to hurt if i like exist at this point so i might upload something later. This will probably just be a side hobby. Watching Bojack and writing down what i feel ab the episode and my feeling on the show as a whole. I hope i keep writing this tho. It’s fun!

Thank you!!!!
