I've been debating about which console is worth getting a orignal xbox or playstation 1. I like the older aesthetic feeling / dark matrix type of vibe.
Thanks ! I appreciate the feed back, I'm not trying to spend my money on a console and then it breaking down or having problems later on. Would you say it would be better to buy the console new or used ?
So, after reading your post again, are you sure you don't mean PS2? The PS2 released in 2000, which later competed with the original Xbox in 2001 whereas the PS1 is the previous generation released in 1995 which, of course, is older and inferior in graphics and performance.
Anyway, as for what you should buy... You're not going to find new consoles anymore. Those consoles are easy 2 decades old by now and new and in-box are practically collectors' items unavailable to the masses for cheap prices.
Now, how much should you pay? For a PS1, expect to pay around 80 dollars on Ebay. In my country, I could find a PS1 with 2 controllers for 50 euros. PS2, same thing. I found a PS2 Slim for 50 euros with a bunch of accessories locally, whereas it was around 80 euros on Ebay to ship to the US. The original Xbox, with an 8gb hard drive, should go for around 80-100 euros, so it's a bit more expensive but may be more worth it depending on if you're going to be hacking it OR if you prefer its games.
Now, to wrap up. You should ask every seller you contact to send you clear and detailed pictures of the consoles you're considering buying. Make sure everything's alright and if it looks good, buy it. If you buy locally, try to meet up somewhere and attempt to boot it up or something. If you ship online, be prepared to start a return process ASAP if it doesn't work, do not waste your time!
That's about all the advice I have for you. Good luck!

I'm not sure why you'd go for a PS1. Thing's easily emulated and not worth it.
An Xbox is a much better investment because:
1. it wasn't made in 1995
2. Homebrew scene, emulators and other stuff is great on it!

Oh, and you could just play all those games on a PC anyway through emulators :P
