🎃 ⨾ blog welcome & The Long Halloween (1996-7)

“ This town isn't big enough for two homicidal maniacs. ”

hello hello!! happy almost halloween, and happy first post to this blog :-)

if you don't know me, and i hope you don't yet, my name is tav and i am a massive loser who spends his classes reading comics instead of doing economics! i love love love the world of DC, and if you do too, hit me up 🦇

now, for today, we have The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb, with phenomenal art by Tim Sale!

i thought this comic fit the festive vibe of this week well as we pull costumes from closets and practice makeup. among the few non-festive feeling folk are Bruce Wayne (Batman), Harvey Dent, and Jim Gordon as they find themselves in the midst of a confusing, hair greying, and almost life threatening case, for a new serial killer has emerged— one known only as the Holiday killer (aka, Holiday).

my rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (5/5)

why?

Loeb brings the reader right alongside Batman and Harvey Dent as they get wrapped up in the Holiday murders, both struggling to keep their head above Gotham's murky waters tinted with systemic crime and corruption, or they risk losing their moral codes and anything else separating them from the criminals they catch. This story does a fantastic job of keeping you in the dark, so every reveal turns what you thought you knew right on its head. I couldn't guess the many twists if I tried.

Accompanied by Sale's unique art style, this 13 issue mystery keeps you guessing until the very last page, and is a delightful read.
