Vincent's Movie Monster Mash Day 15: Titane

Content warning: Alongside spoilers for Titane (2021) this article contains frank discussion of pregnancy, body horror and transphobia. Read responsibly.

Do I recommend it?: No

When the credits rolled I praised time for letting me be free from this film, and immediately went to check the reviews and of course, they were all glowing. Apparently this piece of shit won a Palme D’Or! Cool. I check the negative reviews specifically, and they’re all talking about how this movie is sooooo weird and gross and how film snobs are just dumb losers who’ll throw praise at anything with arthouse sensibilities. No, that’s not why this is beloved. It’s beloved because it lets cishets pretend to have deep and profound thoughts about gender and sexuality so they can jerk off about how smart and progressive they are. It’s a film made to give an egoboost to the dumbest cis lobotomites imaginable, so of course they all fell for the bait.

People will tell you this movie is about a lot of Important and Meaningful things. They’ll tell you how it’s about female sexuality and the fluidity of gender and found family and unconditional love. That’s not true though. Titane is about how transmasculine people can never escape their female biology and the way that transness actually makes you a freaky body horror monster.

Titane follows a despicable and entirely hateable serial killer who exploits an old man’s grief for his missing son so she doesn’t get tossed in jail for her senseless killing of innocent queer sex workers. Off to a great start!

The more she plays the part of a man the more she becomes a man. She’s even putting herself through intense amounts of pain and suffering and scarring to keep up the facade. She binds not only her chest with bandages (of fucking course it’s bandages) but also her pregnant stomach, which splits open and starts leaking black oil. Hospital? Abortion? Don’t even think about it.

Even as her “father” realizes the truth, he still holds her and says “no matter who you are, you’re my son.” Which would be really sweet if she wasn’t a manipulative, lying murderer.

You might be wondering “hey Vincent, you’re a trans man and said this film is transphobic, so why are you using she/her pronouns for the main character you said is supposed to be transmasculine?” That’s a great question my dear viewer! That’s because it ends with the main character realizing “oh hey I actually am a woman and this whole being a guy thing was just a way to lie and manipulate my way into male spaces to avoid being held accountable for murdering multiple people including one lesbian sex worker. I’m gonna dance sexy on top a car for my straight colleagues and try and fuck my surrogate dad now.” After which she dies giving birth to her carsex baby. Her last words saying that her name isn’t Adrien, but Alexia. Reasserting her womanhood as she dies doing the most womanly thing possible, giving birth. Oh, but her dalliance with transmasculinity actually made not only her a disgusting creature made of non-biological material and leaking disgusting fluids all the time, but her child too! Because she had the audacity to express her sexuality and gender, she is forced to suffer in her FEMALE WOMANLY EVIL DISGUSTING BODY until she dies and gives birth to another one of her kind. Even though the only one who takes HRT in this is a cis man! Just to have another twist of the knife there, in case you weren’t sure this movie is intentionally malicious and transphobic.

Fuck this movie. Fuck Julia Decorneau (I hated Raw too by the way), fuck everyone who’s ever recommended it, fuck everyone who likes it, fuck everyone involved in making it and giving it awards. All of them can swallow my transgender dick and homosexual balls. Support real queer horror and for the love of god watch better movies.
