Vincent's Movie Monster Mash Day 14: Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person

Given the title of this film I was expecting something a lot more depressing. While moody, this movie is extremely charming and darkly comedic. It gave a bit of an Addam’s Family vibe to me. This is for people who own Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge T-Shirts.

I found it interesting the way vampirism is treated in this film. Links between vampirism and sex is nothing new, obviously, but mixing it with this sort of coming of age romcom vibe almost gives off that the main character is demisexual or struggling with shame about her own sexuality after a traumatic event. It offers a degree of realism that you don’t usually get from this kind of movie.

When I realized the film was going for a more comedic slant, I was a little nervous at how they would treat the topic of suicide. Especially when the protagonist walks into a group therapy session. I’ve seen far too many films where this kind of environment is used as a way to laugh at people with “stupid problems” or who dare to have mental health issues in an unpalatable way. But to my surprise and relief, it takes the topic seriously and treats it with respect while still keeping its dark comedy tone in check. There’s a nice balance to it and a level of understanding of suicidality in the dialogue that makes me think there was some experience there. Whether it was with themselves or someone they knew.

While I did enjoy it, I found the ending to be disappointing. Not because it was bad or unsatisfying, but because now I want a movie about Sasha and Paul in their sexy little goth getups being ethical vampire assassins. Oh well, can’t always get what you want.

This is a fun movie overall. A great suggestion for a Halloween party or a date night movie, maybe even a good choice to share with your friends who aren’t super into horror.
