I finished the series about three weeks ago, and I'm just about finishing up the manga. And I feel like I need to scream into the void about it, about Light Yagami and his descend into insanity, the glorification of Watari and the Wammy's house, and plenty more.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
First of all, phenomenal series. Truly my number one, I don't think anyone I've watched or anything I'll watch will ever top Death Note. The writing is beautiful, the imagery, the symbolism, there is so much to account for. But I'll steer from just praising it, because I'd like to criticize some of the character's as people.
First of all, Watari, or, Quillsh Wammy. He is not shown much in the show, but they tell you a little more about him int he manga. We know he founded the Wammy's house, and raised L since he was 8 years old (we learn that in the flashback). At first, it might seem like something an angel would do-- an orphanage for gifted and traumatized children. But from what I've gathered, some of the caretakers are abusive, and the children are hostile towards one another. Whether we want to accept it or not (and I sure as hell don't), Watari groomed L. Grooming is not always sexual, but he molded him into the detective he grew up and died as. Now, I am not dismissing the fact that Watari most likely truly cared for L, because I think he did, but what he did is not excused by that fact. L does not know how to take care of himself. He could, but he never learned, because he was never taught, because all Watari focused on while raising L is for him to be the perfect detective.
(will continue later. in progress. rough draft.)
