when everything they built begins to crumble, when their voices can no longer find anyone to hear them, and the last faint breath of the wind dissipates into the air, they will look toward the sky one final time and ask:
“why have you forsaken us?”
and the silence of the answer was all that remained
they will search for signs among the stars, interpret distant lights, invent new gods to fill their longing for meaning. But, deep down, they will know that the sky has always been (and always will be) still and silent
because, in the end, perhaps there was never anyone there to hear their prayers
