what ever happened to social media being social? feel like all i ever do on these platforms is just look at people's lives and try to make my life look like everything is fine and dandy and visually aesthetic and the more i think about it the lamer i think it is.

it started to wilt as soon as whatever social media first sensationalized content over interaction started to gain popularity, and became the norm, i'd say around coronavirus quarantine.
i can't give an exact timeframe where the tides shifted,,, but the main reason how people used social media changed alongside the people that used it. youtube then compared to youtube now was different because the community was smaller (making it easier to connect with people instead of being disconnected as just a follower), as well as not in general being entirely affected by any corporation behavior because, in 2006, it was still owned by a couple of guys that weren't sure what they were doing!
i don't like the shift of attitude either, but it is what people drift to. if you don't like it, it is as easy to just steer away from it as the people you surround yourself with. don't be afraid to use it anyway for the people you're around, but if it's no good, don't hold onto it.

Omg yes. I always like it and enjoy it but then when I try and get to know them they just become so dry and so distant and then its like so unmotivating to even try and make friends or get to know people.

In my opinion it’s because social media has been so capitalized on now. It used to serve as a way to share your life, make friends, and communicate with others from a distance — but now it’s just about money like everything else in this world. I mean you can literally fund your entire life by making YouTube videos.
Social Media was always supposed to be a hobby, not a career. That’s what killed it in my mind.
you put it very well, presenting yourself online years back in general was mostly about people just being themselves, and you would make friends through knowing others, or looking for social places where strangers are welcome!
nowadays social media is treated as either a news source, or a job. you post because you need money from engagement, or because it's the place you get the news, not because you go there to actively talk to people or otherwise. it's unfortunate, but it's what it is
