Maybe because a lot of people think that their existence is not entirely defined and limited to their gender? There are so many other aspects of a person's identity which they might consider more important in day to day life and online interactions (ex: hobbies, music, politics...). The only reasons I can think of for someone wanting to know if someone is trans is if they want to date them or discriminate based on gender. But I digress, before making any judgments, why do you even care?
