Asteroid 99942 Apophis (2004 MN4) is going to impact earth in 2029, the idiots on the internet say.
"It's on FRIDAY the 13th, it's gonna hit us!"
(although that's funny)
"God will protect us!"
(omfg shut the fuck up)
"Space isn't real!"
(holy shit.........very real things I read online)
GET FACT CHECKED, BITCHES!
"It will definitely hit us in the future!"
NO OMG. 2029 is the closest caluculated (and they are very very good at math mind you) and for every other passing it gets further for the foreseeable future, not as close as 2029.
see it for yourself, list of close approaches: https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/tools/sbdb_lookup.html#/?sstr=2004%20MN4&view=OPC
YOU NEED IT TO BE AS CLOSE AS 0.05 AU TO BE HAZARDOUS
yet coming up 2029 it's AT LEAST 0.0006 AU

AFTER THAT, IN THE YEAR 2116 IT WILL BE 0.001 AU, STILL NOT AS CLOSE AS 2029. PLEASE DO NOT DENY THE FACTS WE ALREADY HAVE! TRUST THE DATA! BECAUSE IT FUCKING WORKS!
thank you...
It is unobservable until 2027, naturally, because it is in the daytime sky in its orbit around Sun. That's normal.
BUT- and I mean that very hypothetically--
An article was written about how "the odds of impact are slightly higher than thought"
Please take that phrase with a grain of salt. It is still not going to strike, we know this. These are hypothetical odds and there is nothing to say that it will go through a gravity keyhole. Great article though!
ANOTHER "BUT"
MY FAVORITE UNCERTAINTY
One thing that is likely is that its trajectory will change after interacting with Earth's gravity in 2029.
I can't wait 2 see wat it changes, wat a learning opportunity for plantery defense (https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/)!
