Everything is so surreal.
The week before move-in was heart-attack after heart-attack, to the point where I thought I wouldn’t even make it here at all. And here I am. Typing away on my laptop. Making sure my roommates don’t wake up from the clacking of my keyboard.
I really hope this doesn’t come back to smack me in the face, but I thought college would be a lot less glamorous. Maybe it’s just the freshman in me being “bright-eyed and bushy tailed” but everything so far has been amazing. I was mentally preparing to have evil professors and to find a biohazard in the communal showers. What I was not expecting was for things to go so well.
I’ve had virtually no issues since I got here and everyone’s been really nice. My classes genuinely interest me and I love the atmosphere here. There's always something to do in such a walkable city, which is a breath of fresh air compared to having price rite as your main third space for entertainment.
I’m officially a Freshman at a university in the US where I study Fashion Merchandising and Retail. I grew an intense love for fashion from an early age, but what really cemented my desicion to major in Fashion Merchandising was my internship with a Nonprofit organization called Shea Fashion.
I won’t bore you with all of the details (yet) but it was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I got to showcase my own original designs and model them for a highschool fashion show at the end of my senior year of highschool. It was then that I realized that fashion was one of the most underrated art forms in the world. Fashion is feeling, culture, and movement. I want to be a part of that industry.
I still haven't figured out what I want to do with my degree yet because there's so many possibilities. I’m very passionate about sustainability though. (Textile waste is absolutely no joke and I will be making posts about that don’t you worry!!)
I like that nobody knows me. I’m not ashamed of who I was in highschool at all, but I’m always open to improvement. What better way to improve than to take advantage of my clean slate?
Highschool Hadley was okay, but I don't want okay. He served me as well as he could but he's just not me anymore. The current Hadley is inspired by the fear of living a mundane lifestyle. I want to make a difference in the world and there’s nobody saying I can’t, so I will.
I’ve been on this self improvement kick all summer long and I think now’s the time to start implementing an actual routine. So my first goal is to figure shit out. I’ve applied for a job in the sustainability center at my school, I’ve located the gym and my designated study space, and I’ve been eating 3 meals a day which is a big deal for me, so for the time being, I’d say I’m doing pretty good.
I’m mainly starting this blog for sentimental reasons. I hope that 4 years from now I can look back and reminisce on my college experience, knowing that I made it and that everything worked out in the end.
That being said, here's some of the things I like and will most likely want to thought dump about on here:
- Fashion (Design and Merchandising)
- College Life
- Personal Essays
- Goals + Aspirations
- Whatever I want because this isn’t a democracy
Okay, I know I just said this blog isn’t a democracy, but I still want to have conversations with people. Maybe we can give each other community, or maybe we can just kill time. Who the fuck knows and who the fuck cares? All I want in life is to help a lot of people and have a lot of fun.
As I navigate college life, that's probably what a lot of my posts are gonna be about for a while. I do want to tie in fashion and building by career as well. I’m sort of a jack of all trades so it’s hard to put me into a box, but for the time being I’ll try to stick to one thing.
I hope you guys fall victim to my dashing good looks and wit so you come back for more. I want my audience to feel seen in my unconventional way of life. I rarely see people like me in fashion spaces, or any spaces really. And while I love being special and different, it does bum me out sometimes, and I’m sure its that way for others too.
I’m excited to document my classes, club activities, creative projects, and more on this new silly little website I call home.
So, I survived my first week of college and it was suspiciously easy… Should I be concerned?
Maybe.
Blessed be,
Hadley Jade ᯓ★
