Why I Don't Believe in Regretting My Past

I've been thinking a lot lately about the past and all the things I've done that I wish I could have done differently. We all have moments we're not proud of. Maybe we trusted the wrong person, made a decision without thinking, stayed somewhere longer than we should have, or said something we wish we could take back.

But honestly, I don't believe in regretting my past.

That doesn't mean I think everything I've done was right. There are definitely things I would handle differently today. There are choices I wish I had thought through more carefully, and situations I wish I had walked away from sooner.

But if I erased all of those mistakes, I would also be erasing the lessons that came from them.

Sometimes you don't realize how strong you are until you have no choice but to be strong. Sometimes you don't realize your worth until someone makes you feel like you're not enough. Sometimes you have to lose people to realize what you deserve from the people you allow into your life.

Every mistake has taught me something.

Some taught me to trust my gut. Some taught me that not everyone has the same heart I do. Some taught me that forgiving someone doesn't always mean letting them back into your life. And some taught me that I need to love myself enough to walk away from the things that aren't good for me.

I also think we put way too much pressure on ourselves to have everything figured out. We're constantly growing, changing, and learning. The person I was a few years ago didn't know everything I know now, and that's okay.

I don't want to look back at my younger self and be angry at her for not knowing what I know today. I want to look back and have compassion for her. She was learning. She was trying. She was doing the best she could with what she knew at the time. And so am I now.

Maybe the point of life isn't to make every decision perfectly. Maybe it's to make mistakes, learn from them, grow from them, and become a better version of yourself because of them.

So no, I don't regret my past.

I appreciate the good memories, I've made peace with the bad ones, and I'm grateful for the lessons in between.

Everything I've been through has helped shape the person I am today.

And I actually really like who I'm becoming.

This is such a good reminder to not be so hard on ourselves. It’s literally our first life and there are many things to learn and overcome.
I myself, used to overthink the past, especially about β€œpeople I should have left earlier”. But now? it’s much easier to catch those tendencies and patterns and I truly appreciate that learning experience, -despite- being extremely depressed about the outcome. (It eventually does work out)
Awesome post :)
