If you block people who use Gen AI, please take 5 minutes to help a brother out

This is quite a small post, and quite frankly I just want a quick opinion on something I have been thinking about for a hot minute. By all means, I understand people's discourse with Generative AI, and I understand that any blocks coming my way for this post will definitely be deserved. I already do this infrequently enough that I often forget about it.

But, there is one thing that has been itching to bother me. And I'd love to have it cleared up, for anybody who might potentially be willing to hear me out for a minute.

So, I've noticed that across the internet, some people with DNIs have been increasingly adopting Generative AI supporters into theirs. And for the most part, I do agree with this! Gen AI in the coming years is becoming increasingly problematic, and the corporatization of this technology, and the people abusing it to replace people, really sucks.

But there is one little edge case that bothers me, and I don't know if anybody's thought of this; some people use Generative AI for good reasons. Mainly to use them for anything *but* their intended, corporate purpose.

For example, I use Generative AI to roleplay as a supplement. Of course, it's **terrible** and I would replace it with a human in a heartbeat when I had the chance. But it's an interesting technology, and offers me opportunity to do stupid things for my amusement that a human could never provide, at least without getting tired of my shenanigans. It's a stress free environment to test things before trying them with people, I guess.

Among that, I also like the idea of tinkering with the idea of Frame Generation, not as a way to enhance games, but... Just to watch it aimlessly fail at things. I like watching the slop but only in scenarios where it's not intended to be placed. And there are some situations where you can *kind of* force out some extra framerate in a situation where you never could, such as emulation.

There is also, well, the people who make shitty AI music, just to write stupid things. Like comedy songs about obscene things, while also adding their own instrumentation over it.

So, we have a few uses for Generative AI, that I can think of, that do not involve replacing jobs and feeding corporate pockets. People using AI for absurdist comedy, frame generation, roleplay... I use these things in unintended ways for my own amusement, not Big Brother's. Is that justified, or am I in the same field as corporations using it to be lazy?

I'd assume this is on a case by case basis and for the most part is a "hell no, but the insight is cool", but it doesn't hurt to ask, right? Do these exceptions justify exceptions to "no generative ai"? If I do these things, and you don't support generative AI, do I technically support generative AI?

In general, generative AI in the context of Frame Generation is helpful, when most consoles and games are capped to 60 FPS and cause game breaking issues when not capped to 60. Technically, frame gen makes the smoothness better without causing issues. But it's also technically AI.

Obvious, the AI isn't good, and when abused, it does open the door for improper use YES, but as a casual user that usually uses it in a way that it isn't replacing humans or otherwise excusing immature use, am I in the clear?

My main issue with gen AI is the plagarism and consent issues. Gen AI was trained off people who did not consent, and much of it is fanwork that the original artists/authors legally cannot make money from, while OpenAI are allowed to scrape it and profit from it.

There are also people like Hayao Miyazaki (the guy behind Studio Ghibli) who have explicitly stated that they do not support AI, and yet it has become a trend to generate images using their hard work.

Using it for roleplay is definitely iffy, but if you're not posting it I suppose it's technically okay? My main concern there would be that Gen AI can have negative effects on the brain, and after a while you might find that your writing begins to look like AI which could be a problem academically.

you bring up fair points, thank you for dropping by

i don't agree with ai's extent on internet scraping, though i can argue that in my use case, i can *technically* go around this. since i choose to self-host i can just avoid the big bullshit and choose models trained on data from people who have explicitly chosen to add their roleplays to training data such as pygmalion's models, it's not a perfect solution but it does mitigate some of the morality issues there

there is no real way to perfectly "justify" ai use, so much as to make a window of tolerance for it. if we say all ai use is bad, you'd have to extend that to logical ai, and video games use logical ai. you kinda have to be specific, and even then there is some ai that can kinda be used for good, but would have to be tightened down on really strictly to be practical.

i don't use image generating ai so that argument there is null and void. it was fun in 2022 when it was total dogshit. after that it stopped being fun because people kept misusing it. there is a moral gray area for making chatbot images, but really at that point, you might as well not be giving your chatbots icons at all.

there are some situations ai could be helpful but is being widely misused, my biggest argument is frame generation because it technically could make computer hardware live longer (sorta) but its misuse is being encouraged by companies that can't optimize for shit

i wouldn't want to make my ai chat logs public facing anyway so i don't really care,,, i'm aware that i'm practically taking a morality risk using this technology, though i'm not sure if there's any studies that would back ai use degrading the brain? it would explain what i notice in people who heavily use it, although i don't believe i currently use generative ai enough for it to seep into my writing,,, generative ai writing, especially in the roleplay scene can get annoyingly repetitive. it's really noticable compared to chatgpt, try a roleplaying chatbot for like twenty minutes and give it really bland responses, you'll see it in no time

by Bell; ; Report

Yeah I used to roleplay with AI in 2018 when Replika was still new and then in 2022 when C.ai first came out, I think now it's quite boring with the mainstream chatbots but also the human roleplay scene is dead as hell (RIP Amino) so I don't really blame people for going to AI for that.

Self-hosting is probably the best choice, I'm considering it as well once I get a better PC because I do think gen AI can be useful (especially in STEM) when used responsibly and not relied on too much.

I think that having gen AI users in your DNI is still valid though since the majority of users are not responsible about it unfortunately, and some are just outright dicks :/ I guess that's what happens when you hand a tool like this to the general public after failing education systems have convinced everyone that it's okay to be stupid lol

In my personal opinion though, I think if someone is genuinely trying to be ethical and responsible with it, that counts for something. It genuinely is the thought that counts imo. I only really block people for using Gen AI now if it's genuinely everywhere on their profile or if they try to pass off something they generated as their own work.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I legit feel brain damaged because I cannot sleep lately

i speak as somebody who had guilty pleasures with character.ai from 2022 to 2025 and sometimes self-host roleplay models for fun, i get you so much. character.ai is crap now and self-hosting it isn't really the same, but i'm very transparent of my use on it. i do use it, it's not a replacement for roleplay but it's a nice little thing to experiment with roleplay ideas and characters before they're tested on humans.

i, for example, like to experiment with creating characters, and i test their concepts in chatbot roleplays before deciding to keep them around for future roleplays with humans. i get an idea of what i would hate and what i would like, and i don't get judged for trying anything weird but fun. it's nice, but it could never replace the fun of doing it with a human

i wish you luck on the self-hosting journey!! pay attention to vram, i think the graphics card doesn't matter that much; it'll generate slower, but the vram literally decides what models you can run, so pay a little attention to what you have,,, i have a little bit of ram and like 8 gigs of VRAM so i can run 13B models if i really squeeze it and split it into ram

people not wanting to interact wiht people who praise ai (same vein as crypto bros) is totally valid and this post wasn't meant to demean those people, but like,,, people are just not specific, at all. i wanted to get an idea of the general opinions, so i could at least make a guess what exceptions i could get away with

if we blocked all gen ai use, some potentially really cool experimental stuff could be shut down. ai roleplay would be shot down. but if the door was open, that leaves "ai artist" to fill the room, and those are pretty bad.

by Bell; ; Report

i'm putting my opinion out there because i believe i have valid reasons to experiment with it, but i'm not trying to be malicious or anything,,, like, this is how i view generative AI, i'm not using image ai, i'm using it knowing i'm making compromises to quality and sometimes i find that funny, please don't block me i'm trying to be ethical and reasonable with it 🙏

i could never use gen ai assets on my profile bro, absolutely not,,, who wants to make a spacehey profile with an ai generated pfp

not personally but as someone studying games coding i have seen some people supplement this with generative ai, which i have sort of mixed opinions on, i think its fine as long as you're using it to supplement knowledge you already have rather than just using it to shortcut things you don't already know.

personally i don't really use it even in that scenario as i find writing code to be quite enjoyable but i can see the replication of existing code to be tedious for other people. sorry i realise as i am writing this that it isn't exactly on your point it's just my personal reflection of the subject

i absolutely agree, it's already a pretty morally grey area i'm treading in by using it at all, but i believe that there are certain use cases for it where for a minority of people, there genuinely could be a use case that doesn't impact the work of people, but also offers a benefit.

it's still a technology being massively abused by corporations to save money and basically create content without human involvement. but it has its uses as a supplement and/or an "aid" that doesn't provide any monetary gain or anything, but just as a little fun side.
for example, frame generation technically does give corporations excuses to not optimize games, yea that sucks. but as ive said it's great for emulation. plus, if you want to save power and try and lower the temperatures of your hardware (say: your hardware is crap and hot), you trade off a bit of the visuals for power consumption. yea that is dystopian and has the door open to be abused, but it has its uses and quite literally could save you money if used responsibly.

but i also like using it incorrectly to see ai artifacts. so there's also a comedy aspect to it in a weird way

i do understand that it has its uses in coding, but where i'm not a program and usually try to figure it out on my own first (even with my limited brain knowledge), i try not to have an opinion on it. there's an obvious "hell no" by trying to use it to make money makers for you and/or to do all the dirty work for you,,, but when it comes to a bit of help, the line's pretty messy and divided

it probably has some valid use, but there's also valid reasons to say no to it entirely. but i also agree that the fun is in the programming, and we should keep the human element so people can still enjoy programming itself

by Bell; ; Report

yeah, i mean. i know this is an extremely nerdy statement but coding in and of itself is sort of an art, every coder will have their own ways of doing little things and optimising and formatting the code that an ai cannot replicate.

yeah it's fair enough to use to a certain extent for frame generation but just slapping that on without any optimisation will just kill the game either way, ai is currently being used like a band-aid on a broken bone in some scenarios and it shows. i think even if a game just uses a little bit of ai it should be disclosed tho as some people do have strong moral and ethical qualms with it, which is fair, the amount of water and energy that data centres take up is insane.

on the personal level i don't think using ai on the occasion is like sort of on a similar level to using non recyclable plastic. yes it's not particularly great but public opinion needs to stop looking at its use on the consumer level and turn instead to the companies that use and prop up the industries instead.

sorry idk if that made complete sense qwq

by Robin Graves; ; Report

ai in programming would *kind of* be nice for some programmers to learn about some techniques, and then they can just optimize and format over it, but it depends on who you ask. i don't know what a majority of programmers think so i choose to not make a statement on it, ask somebody who might be more knowledgable about this

frame generation is horribly misused in terms of optimization, it's insane. like so many modern games are unoptimized, and frame generation is pretty much just their silver bullet. they optimize to 60fps, then anything after that is your problem, use dlss frame gen or suck it up. like a game should be capable of hitting the highest framerate you can squeeze out of it with optimization. frame generation should be an option for power saving, not a requirement for smooth gameplay

"frame generation" would probably imply ai for some, but i understand that might not be enough to disclose AI. usually you have to pick a brand of frame generation, and their technologies (except amd's fsr 1.0; that was different) use AI anyway, so that might be enough for some players. i like ai use for spatial upscalig and frame generation because its neat, but misuse of it is not fun at all and it fucks up the gaming industry. there needs to be a basic ruleset to follow or something

you are literally using their upscaling and frame gen ai on your own graphics card, so the impact on the enviornment doesn't matter too much,,, excluding the training time, the ai just affects your power bill i think, but i'm more than open for anybody else to tell me how it actually works, because i'm not 100% sure? nvidia is not too clear

ai use should be looked at on a case by case basis more because there's technically justifiable use of it, and what is literally just the industry replacing people
