just finished watching heathers 2018 or, if you prefer it, woke heathers
!!! possible spoilers ahead spoilers ahead !!!
at first, i didn't really want to watch it because what is the point of repeating the same story but in a show and even having 10 episodes lasting 40 minutes while the original movie lasts 1 hour 40 minutes?? the first episode was ass BUT then i got SUCKED into it
the first thing i think i should mark is that they took the original concept of permissiveness to another level and showed the students much more than the movie. it's more about our generation i'd say, like a commentary? about the kids who just want to be popular and loved. and of course about veronica and jd.
oh and seeing new faces that you don't see every day in all headlines and popular projects was very refreshing! and calming for some reason
i liked the fashion a lot, it might be odd, yet the heathers are popular for it too. and that show is set in 2018. yeah, the classic story is set in 1980s, and that's what it's called a classic, a legendary film for, but it doesn't mean that there must not be other interpretations with changes. in my opinion, all kinds of revisions and ideas deserve to be seen and treated with respect. the hate woke heathers get is all mostly from it's originality
i like that veronica is different from original. i mean, she already was a little weird and dude she was kinda okay with killing at first, but here she's just batshit crazy. i'd say that veronica and jd even changed their roles at some point, but not too heavily. and the ending suits them very much. a very partners in crime story and i like it
i searched a bit on fandom's opinion and feelings about the "woke" heathers and saw someone's "heathers hot takes" post on tiktok. the first thing they said was that the show isn't that bad, pretty good, it's just the bad serving. "good idea, bad delivering" as they wrote. i don't know what was the budget, but it does indeed look cheap most of the time, but still worth your attention! almost all of the other things i see about heathers the series are just straight up hating with no actual critisism😔
the other take i saw from many other users is that it's not heathers at all, just a whole new story, that should've had some other title. i partially agree with this, as i said earlier it's very different from the original, but it still pursues the same concept: permissiveness. in last episode's outro, for some reason, there was the show's usual logo with "revolution" added in bottom. i don't know anything about it and still am confused, but it could be a good name i think. at least it would be easier to distinguish it from the 1988 movie and the musicals. like, "heathers. revolution". idk sounds too exaggerated but it could do!
if you like the atmosphere of american teenagers, school drama, neon lights, 2010s and such things in movies/shows, i would recommend it! but keep it in mind that these series seem to not have a high budget
overall, i liked it!! i'd rate it 3,5/5.
