Why I don't want to use most social media and discord anymore: a sort of vent

tws for identity crises, masking, and people on the internet not being the best

As a small 13 year old in 2018-2019, I was finally old enough to make my own social media accounts. The first one I made was reddit and then a discord. After 3 years of being on the internet with my own username, (sometimes multiple different usernames) I can't help but look back. My first few years were filled with a kind of excitement, finally I was able to comment, post, and like things. The world was my oyster, albeit a terrifyingly mean one.

Over the years, I have built many versions of myself to show to other internet users. The kind but shy newbie, the rude gamer, the person who just kind of lurked, the "excited to be here" person. I started on the internet at a young age with a want to be a vlogger, but over time I seem to have lost my sense of self. Where is that bright eyed kid, willing to go along with the most stupid ideas because she cared about the person on the other side of the screen more than she should have? I know I can't just blame the internet for this less I sound like your grandparent, but it at least played a major part of how I formed my identity.

Now, there is nothing I can do to change the internet, or change my younger self and stop her from brushing aside basic internet safety rules. I can however move forward, and start to build my own identity. Not something I think everyone will like, but something I like. I hope you can watch me on this journey.

- Kari, future vlogger once I can buy a camcorder.
