teaching myself to code to make my own unique social media

I have beef with snapchat.

i absolutely loved the unique social media approach to snapchat when it first came out. easy to share things with your friends with the image text features, the saved memories, back when filters were a new(er) thing lol. snapchat is a very unique social media and it was super cool when it first came out.

but app developers need to understand, not every single social media in existence needs reels of some kind. i hate snapchat reels. and not to mention the fact that my generation of users was quickly made into victims by the disappearing images, which snapchat doesnt like to acknowledge.

im learning how to code, using online courses in app development and i am doing so with the goal to create my own app. something that feels like old snapchats uniqueness, but with extra safety precautions to not let children run into the predatory situations i did. and also, no reels. social media is supposed to be social. its not supposed to be an addictive algorithm whos main purpose is to keep you scrolling endlessly. fuckerburg doesnt understand that either, but anyway.

i want to know what people want in a social media that, similar to spacehey, is built to be social. what features do people miss about old snap? what features do people want removed or at minimum made optional? any safety features, cosmetic features, profiles, filters, id absolutely love to hear what anyone else would want in a social media that is actually built around community and creativity. any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated and i hope to have good updates on the progress soon!

I think learning to code is awesome, good for you! I used to code regularly back in the day, but have an awful lot to brush up on. I was thinking about taking some free courses through Coursera? & this is going waaaay back, but I remember a thing called MyYearBook that was fairly popular and had a bunch of different categories that encouraged creativity and socialization. You could create quizzes, polls, advice columns, and there was an online magazine (MyMag). Granted, there were not many safety measures put into place, and it did have an area that encouraged dating, etc. Just some ideas that you might be interested in implementing!

i do definitely love some of these! if i can manage to turn this into an actual project id want it to be similar to spacehey in the sense that it promotes community, critical thinking, expression but uses the unique picture and video format that snapchat has. these are some really nice suggestions to have, thank you so much!!

Yeah cuz everybody wants another retro social media, maybe go back to the drawing board and think of a more original idea

i feel like you misunderstand. there isnt anything "retro" about my idea, and thats an ironic complaint considering youre on a site that came from the vibe of myspace in particular. i am not aware of any other social media similar to snapchat, and the reason i like snapchat is because i like the unique type of picture and video format they use. thats the only thing that would be specifically taken from snapchat. not to mention, if anything it would be like a remade snapchat 2.0 with user protection and enjoyment to be prioritized over the purposefully additive dopamine doom scrolling format nearly every single social media has now more than just a retro nostalgic remake.

the purpose and importance of having websites like spacehey is they allow people to actually think and interact with the community rather than mindless content consumption. you dont have to dumb down your content to make it easily digestible for those who have lost their attention span, it promotes sharing ideas, challenging beliefs (which is important for critical thinking skills) and it promotes creativity. when the major social medias have become purely about popping out content at an insane rate and in turn consuming it at an insane rate, you lose the social aspect and it all becomes either a performance built to keep you as engaged as possible purely for monetary benefit, or it becomes a tool to dumb you down and make you pliant and easy to manipulate because you lose interest in thinking for yourself since its not an overwhelming automatic dopamine release. its important to have variety to these things and its even more important to have options that are low stimulation that are truly actually created for the purpose of community and expression. i want to take the creative aspects of snapchat and just create something similar that has much more protection against doom scrolling, predatory behavior and mindless consumption. not to mention the absurdity of having a image/video based social that as of 2027 they will now charge you for storage on.

its not just another retro rebrand because its not a retro and its not a rebrand. i want to take the foundation they had, which in my personal opinion is really cool, and create something similar while keeping it from turning into another slop littered brain cell crematory.

my point is snapchat was a really cool concept until they lost the plot. i just wanna bring back the plot.
