He sat on the floor, vision swimming in the all-consuming black abyss. Every thought swirled in his mind, clouding his clarity and blocking his throat. He cradled closely to himself, making himself smaller in the large, empty void that surrounded him in his every peripheral. His limbs felt like sludge and his heart beat louder than any noise ever heard. He could feel his hands quiver. If he still had hands. His stomach a pit that felt bottomless and weighed heavy on his soul. He gripped his shoulders tight, maybe if he felt enough pain, he would wake from this nightmare that felt as if it eliminated the existence of time. Perhaps it had been hours, days, maybe decades. Or what if only minutes passed, seconds? His internal clock ceased to exist and any format that showed the passing of time had drowned in the dripping ink long ago. The idea of eternity and concept of mortality swarmed his head with dreadful and various versions. Thoughts that he should never have questioned sprouted from his mind, sinking him further and further into the darkness that slowly swallowed him whole. He closed his eyes and when he opened them he was on a sidewalk. Faces walked by but none stopped and helped him. Maybe they couldn’t hear him or maybe they didn’t care. He tried to reach his hands out, to try and ask for aid, but his hands, his arms were swallowed and sunken in the abyss that still consumed him. He screamed at them for help, for anyone to stop and listen. But no one did. Most didn’t even give him a glance, and the ones that did had disgust glaring in their eyes. A couple even spat on him as they walked. Surely, someone was going to stop for him. Surely, at some point, there would be a kind soul to stop and put out a hand for him. But, before that could ever happen, the abyss dragged him down more and more. He gnawed at the ground, cracking and breaking his teeth in a desperate attempt to maybe stop his inevitable demise. Still, his body kept going down and down and down. When it was only his head still above the ground, he sighed in defeat and accepted his fate. Then, and only then, did the void settle, and he was no more.
