transfem jax is a transphobic misogynistic stereotype and im tired of pretending she isnt

[IF YOU DISAGREE TELL ME WHY!!! ID LOVE TO KNOW!!!! /gen]

tl;dr : jax being transfem is shallow and a dumb idea. she's an abusive stereotype, misogynistic, and is written shallowly. gooseworx is a terrible person who probably should have gone to therapy (/lh) before trying to write a show.

ahhhh, tadc.... truly a marvel of writing gone to waste. to start, i do NOT condone sending hate to anyone involved in tadc. i think gooseworx wrote a show that was pushed to cut content that could have saved the show. but i also ! think gooseworx should be held responsible (IN A WAY THAT DOES NOT INVOLVE HARRASEMENT) for what they wrote, and that their actions (of being homophobic, misogynistic, and racist) deserve a spotlight to be called out on. so here is my IN-DEPTH thoughts about the finale of the amazing digital circus and why it sucks. especially transfem jax.

the finale has officially been out for over a month, so i can pretty safely say this isnt a knee-jerk reaction. after YEARS of the show building up its characters, the story was this: they were indeed mindscans on a computer (congratulations matthew patrick for yet another correct theory), and the hopes of learning more about the tertiary cast? shattered, all in favour of focusing on jax and confirming a (rather shitty) fan theory that had little actual basis in the show.

to get to the meat and potatoes: yeah. transfem jax is a terrible idea, and ruined the beautiful arc they had built for jax as a male character. allow me to elaborate:

(for context, i'll be using she/her and he/him pronouns interchangeably for jax depending on the gender that makes sense in that context. i wont be referring to anyone else with pronouns, so keep that in mind.)

jax was built up from the beginning as an asshole. the trouble-maker, no good bad-guy, cut and dry. he abused gangle, was hinted to have a complicated past with ragatha, and as the show continued these actions only got more extreme, eventually targetting pomni and zooble too. in the final episode, jax abstracts (we'll get to that later because this was lazy writing too) and pomni, by the grace of god (or deus ex machina in the form of kinger teaching her code in a lazy excuse to justify this choice) is able to hug the abstracted jax and see him one final time, finally uncovering his (of course, because why wouldnt it be) tragic backstory including an abusive dad and him killing his mom before escaping to the circus.

let me be clear: i ENJOY JAX AS A CHARACTER. i think, as a man, he's my favourite in the entire series. but as a trans woman? that all falls apart.

as a man, jax's story follows themes not often explored. jax is abused as a child, and therefore as an adult parrots that abuse back onto the women around him, becoming a male abuser. this is INTERESTING!!!!! this is GOOD WRITING!!!! this is FUN!!!!! throughout the course of the story, jax kills two women. one, his mother, in the real world by inflicting physical pain on her during an argument. the second, ribbit, a character highly implied to have a romantic connection to him, that he pushes away and drives to suicide after a moment of emotional intimacy leading to him dropping his mask and being genuine with her. we see this pattern happen again when, after winning with pomni, he shoves her away from a hug and immediately returns to his abusive self in order to save himself from the pain of genuine connection once again. he also victimizes gangle to the point of even branding her with an insult as a name. it just,,, gets to be a lot.

let me be CLEAR. jax IS an abuser!! he follows those tendencies and routinely hurts the women around him. and this is IMPORTANT!!! it is a specific narrarative decision from gooseworx and the other writers that these behaviours ONLY happen with women!! jax does NOT attack kinger or caine, the only two men in the cast, in the same way he does every other character. this is becase jax, being raised by his abusive father, learned to parrot the ideologies of "femininity is weak, so women are weak, so women are bad". and HOW OFTEN DOES THAT HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE????? using this lens, of jax being a male abuser, pomni breaking into his psyche after he abstracts and jax finally letting her in is POWERFUL. its too late for him to break the cycle of abuse, but it humanizes him in a way that allows audiences to see that abusers often come from a pattern. his abstraction is still punishment, he isnt 'cured', and he still remains stuck in the circus. but he starts healing, and thats what matters. he's shown to have messed up, is punisned, and then grows and remains punisned by the narrative in a way that you almost NEVER see. gangle, his primary victim, also DOESNT FORGIVE HIM. she's allowed the power of not feeling sorry for him. this is,,, still not handled well. but even still its nice to see, only if just for a little bit.

jax also HATES being perceived as feminine. the maid dress? my least favourite gag. not only is it humiliating a character that obviously doesnt enjoy it (something something normalization of noncon themes. thats a rant for another day. its just gross.), but its making fun of one of the deepest parts of his character. jax HATES being weak. he hates being belitlled. he hates being made fun of. so for the other characters to be abusive (yes, humiliating someone is abuse, talk to the fuckin wall. also yes, its abuse even if the person hurt you first. talk to the SECOND, even THICKER wall) to him??? it ruins him!! to the point its internalized as homophobia (because in his mind femininity is also him being gay, even if you hc him as straight or not) in his internal narrative!!! which then shoves him FURTHER intl that mindset !!!!!!

in totality, jax's character as a man shows representation FOR men about the logical pitfalls abusive men fall into. are some people just abusive? sure. but so many MORE are CREATED. this doesnt excuse jax's actions, but it DOES show audience members a side of the abuser storyline that you dont often see.

now flip the script and view jax as a trans woman. her abuse? "shes just pushing away femininity as a coping mechanism !!!!1!!1!!! internalized transphobia, INTERNALIZED TRANSPHOBIAAA1!!!1!1!!!". her aversion to femininity that entirely contradicts any semblance of sense for this character trait? "SHE SECRETLY LIKES IT!!!! ITS PROOF!!!!", i could go on. it doesnt read as an interesting character point (character abused as child later learns to heal from that and accept themselves as the very thing they were raised to hate), it reads as using her being trans as a shitty excuse for her actions. also?? lets address the god damn elephant in the room???

being a trans woman should NOT come with misogyny. at ANY fuckin point in your journey. following the release of the episode and gooseworx's confirmation, i saw trans women come out of the WOODWORKS relating to jax's abuse of women. sincerely from the BOTTOM of my heart: if that is you you are JUST a misogynist. it is not normal to hurt women because youre in denial. you are JUST a terrible person. jax's primary trait showcasing her supposed transfemininity being the systematic abuse of the women around her was a terrible decision, and it is not only innacurate but actively HARMFUL to all trans women when the dominant alt-right arguments against trans women are that they are abusive to cis women. abuse and being trans has zero correlation. jax should have never been chosen to be the character to portray an identity as hated and as complicated as being transgender if such a pivotal point of her character was going to be her hatred of women. ESPECIALLY SINCE THERE WAS ZOOBLE RIGHT THERE, whose whole CHARACTER was not knowing who they are-but instead, zoobles role was removed so jax could continue to shine as a shitty, bad-written self insert.

SPEAKING of erasure, while outside of transfem jax's fault, lets talk about racism. another argument for transfem jax is the presence of stevie wonder's 'Isn't she lovely?', a song about the birth of his black daughter. it is both reductionist and ignorant to dumb the song about celebrating black life down to "song that plays during shock value scene to hint at character being trans". it is ALSO racist to erase the (gorgeous and perfectly fitting) voice OF said black artist, and replace said vocals with the voice of a man that is not ONLY not black, but a LOLICON!!! someone who is ATTRACTED to SPECIFICALLY young-looking anime girls !!! and who ALSO defended SHADMAN. YEAH, the dude who has drawn REAL LIFE CHILDREN in sexual manners. Along with. a HEINOUS list of other crimes. I, myself, am not black and therefore not directly affected by this, but to quote several amazing creators who ARE:

- " this song fundamentally does not make sense in this moment whatsoever,,, and so like when i saw this sequence go down, i was like 'what the fuck does this have to do with jax dying???'" (@ghostluvrl0l)

- "this is almost as disrespectful as stranger things using purple rain." (@intothefandom)

also! gooseworx (the creator) and micheal kovak have REPEATEDLY been OPENLY racist. again, this has been beaten into the earth. for them to continue bastardizing the song AFTER their history?? it feels purposeful.

and finally: TRANSFEM JAX ISNT CANON. the post 'canonizing' it was released AFTER THE SHOW'S FINALE. it uses the same logic JK Rowling did calling dumbledore gay after harry potter was done in an attempt to absolve her of the other bigotry in the series. you CANNOT spend most of the series with zero hints to a character's identity, make a shitty stupid tumblr post calling it 'canon' and call that representation. it HURTS to see so many queer fans roll over and show their bellies over "b-b-b-b- but representation matters !!!" when a character ISNT EVEN REPRESENTATION. if you can watch the show and not know at all jax is a trans woman? congratulations, jax ISNT a trans woman! your representation sucks! the QUALITY of representation matters far more than the quantity EVER could, and as ive explained into the ground and more, jax ISNT that !!!!

lets also talk about how jax's identity was almost immediately dumbed down by the fandom as just a reason to ship her with ribbit and pomni as "oh my god yuri !!!1!1!1!!!!". i am SICK and TIRED of people dumbing down characters just to fetishize them. you people would take a stereotypical gay man and just accept it point blank if it made you feel better about your favourite ship (and frankly, seeing the scary overlaps between the tadc and hazbin hotel/helluva boss fandoms proves it. looking at angel dust here SPECIFICALLY).  and also, NO. it DOESNT fucking matter that goose is a trans woman. she STILL wrote a transphobic character.

its a problem in it of itself that people excuse queer creator's queerphobia CONSTANTLY in the indie space, but GOD its INFURIATING.

idk. transfem jax sucks. jax as a character shouldnt be trans. even in headcanons. you have to ignore so much of his story to make him trans, and it ruins his character arc. hes not good rep, and it doesnt matter if we need transfem rep because jax is a stupid, horribly written stereotype written by disgusting people. thats my take. the end.

and again before you throw a fit:

- i am a fan of the show who has spent years of my life dedicated to these characters. i was here since the teaser dropped. ive grown alongside the show and it still holds a place in my heart. but that doesnt absolve it from criticism.

- i myself am trans (ftm) and have spent years of my life fighting for equal rights for both trans men and women. so no, im not transphobic

- some of my favourite characters in media have been transfem. i think theyre GREAT /gen

- im more than welcome to criticism in the comments but i WILL also respond with my thoughts. i love conversation about media !!

i had a hunch jax was trans before it was actually confirmed but i do think it couldve been handled a lot better, especially with the way it was almost written as if..now that shes trans, we just have to forgive her? which isnt a good thing to put in your story, and so many people have completely butchered jax's character and now act like she can do no wrong when all she did was TORMENT everyone!!!

Report Comment

also one thing i forgot to mention most of gooseworx's writing just SUCKS in general because it was all told through her tumblr and so she didnt really have to elaborate on anything in the actual show it was all very disappointing

by the shitter; ; Report

yeahh,,, i feel like also though that 'hunch' people are describing is normal fandom activity and headcanons, and gooseworx called that a day when trying to write what could have been a complicated transfemme character. it was just not god writing on her part, and as a fandom 8 think tadc fans deserved a story more fleshed ojt and better explored than what they got.

valid asf,i wholeheartedly understand it :sob: i really dont get why people get SO PRESSED when people say that lowk, ive seen people lose their MINDS at the mere concept of hating em after the background reveal like it excuses anything,,,,

by Sirius; ; Report

I lost a friend cuz I said I didn't like Jax. They tried to excuse her actions by saying "She went through trauma!!" Like ok?? Me too??? I HATEEE when ppl try to use trauma and mental illness as an excuse. I'm not trans so I dont have an opinion on the transphobia arguments but I can sorta see where ppl are coming from as someone who is queer and mentally ill.

I see you have good intentions but I cannot disagree more, respectfully. Jax is not meant to be a "positive" trans rep, and that is not transphobic. not every instance of trans rep is going to be nice because, a lot of the time, that's far from what the reality of being trans is. Jax is a cautionary tale. repressing yourself, refusing to accept your true self, along with having serious trauma without getting help or allowing yourself to heal can all lead you to become destructive. not always. but can.

When a trans person looks at Jax, they're not supposed to think "she's literally just like me fr" (if they do they need help if they aren't already getting it), they're meant to think "I don't want to be like her, how can I take the steps to prevent myself from repeating her mistakes?" the writing could have been handled better, yes, but to say she should've never been trans or dismiss that she's trans at all is potentially harmful itself.

I've seen with my own eyes how this story has literally helped so many trans women come out or even realize they're trans, which is so beautiful. no matter the case, there have been a lot of amazing outcomes in real life from jax's story. I don't think this shouldn't be overshadowed by how it could be "potential ammo for transphobes" when they're always going to hate us no matter what media they use to justify their beliefs. this is the same language being used for justifying how neopronouns are bad and "ruin our reputation"

and to specify, I'm not even a fan of tadc. I don't know anything about the creator or what she's done so I'm not speaking based on that at all. but I am incredibly enthusiastic about defending transfem characters whether they're confirmed or implied, or if the media has dark rep or just pure fluff. mizuki from pjsk, kirara from jjk, sm more. seeing so much critique and denial about transfem characters but barely any for transmasc ones, it can get tiring

I don't think this should be overshadowed****** typo of the century geez

by xX.. Rainie Rawr ..Xx [⚢]; ; Report

ok to start off: i am ALSO OPEN about criticizing transmasc / trans man characters. even MORE than i am with trans women, since thats MY identity. to assume blindly im falling into a transmisogynist pitfall when you know NOTHING about me is not something i'd appreciate. just because you don't agree with my take doesnt mean i must be blinded by prejudice against trans women, and i think that wasn't something that should have been mentioned here at all because it does absolutely nothing to support or deny the characters at hand. trans masc characters are not being babied in literature either, it's just that more trans women are talked about on a larger scale. and thats ok!!!! i LOVE some of the other characters you mentioned !!!!! this conversation has NOTHING to do with them because theyre NOT BAD REP !!!
on top of that, as i've said now multiple times under this comment section: trans jax FAILS to capture the experience of being a problematic trans person. she isn't some amazing cautionary tale. her abstraction was handled horribly, and because of it's narrative effect came off as forgiving her for her actions. gangle, even though i talk about being happy in part about her not forgiving jax, was STILL expected to feel bad. EVERYONE in the cast was. jax's abuse of the characters was excused with a tragic backstory and wasn't even narratively punished, becausw as shown in glitch media itself, jax is still at least partially conscious while abstracted. she's written as a bad stereotype with ZERO criticism or nuance given to her, and how COULD she get that when her being trans was handled like a bandaid???? for so much of the series, literal YEARS of runtime, there were never ANY hints to her trans identity !!!! the earliest 'hint' is episode 5, over the halfway point into the show, and it was a sad excuse of one anyways. she isnt confirmed trans until the LAST EPISODE anyways, and even that had to be clarified retroactively because it wasn't clear to audiences !!!! i believe wholly that trans women deserve characters that show the nuance of their identity CLEARLY and actually commit to showing that part of themselves !!!! even in her DEEPEST part of herself, NONE of the jaxes shown in her mind were even SLIGHTLY hinted to show a trans woman. it reads as gooseworx, or maybe glitch itself, being too (for lack of term) cowardly to showcase a vital part of this character at the forefront.
transwomen abusers DO exist. transwomen misogynists DO exist. ffs the creator of the show is one. but those identities deserve to be given a platform that will show that no, being a trans woman ISNT being a misogynist. no, being a trans woman ISNT being abusive. jax ISNT that. the very CORE of her identity is her misogyny, which isn't portrayed at ALL as internalzed. the majority of her identity and storyline the fandom clings onto either goes actively against the show's narrative or is based on headcanon. and atp, again, it's no better than jkr claiming dumbledore is gay blindly after the books are out to sheild herself.

honestly i can see where u r coming from but i do kinda disagree. you mention the quality of her rep is more important than quantity while also dismissing all the trans women who do feel represented by her, along with the trans woman who wrote her. and like... people aren't perfect. i'm also ftm, and as a kid that manifested in me being in some weird depths of internet spaces as a kid before i learned... wait... i can lowkey just be a guy and also not be a vile human being...? i don't have to be problematic medias to be male...? so seeing an imperfect trans journey is actually really important to me. i do think we should discuss the unpalatable parts of being transgender more, because jax is the story of what happens when you repress your own biases re:gender and refuse to confront ur own lived experiences. and the point of rep isn't just to be there and smile and wave, it's to say "this is my life and what my transness means to me, how it defines me and how i define it, what it DOES to me". because transness isn't passive, it's a journey, and no journey is without storms and hills.

i DO think her execution is HORRIBLE especially in pacing. she is the only character who has everything about herself put on the table, which is wild for a show with so much therapyspeak. if goose wanted jax to be the main character, she should've just made her the main character instead of pomni. because really pomni's only role in the narrative is to be the new one who's learning alongside the viewer, she's not actually a main character. meanwhile jax has all the main character flags without the actual narrative focus and its so so so jarring. because when you frame her like that... where's gangle's narrative attention? or zooble's or ragatha's? jax is ultimately what happens when the writer doesn't have a real script proofer to make sure the attention is evenly divided or at least makes sense. we went from an episode 8 where everyone was pretty involved and jax had no part, to a full series finale where jax was the entire focus. and zooble could've been a GREAT foil to jax! but no! he gets NOTHING. they get one scene with caine in the therapy chair.

so tbh i think jax is good rep done poorly

Report Comment

there is no such thing as "good rep done poorly". good rep done poorly is STILL just bad rep. the problem with transfem jax is that she ALSO fails to capture the expirience of being a problematic trans person, something im almost certain i mentioned under another comment. this also ignores the fact that jax was confrmed trans retroactively and therefore was given zero time to explore the complexities of that identity. jax was written by a trans woman yes, but that trans woman is misogynistic, racist, and in general a terrible person. so the people that relate to jax? are far more likely to be abusive. jax was written shallowly, and im firmly of the belief that in a day and age that trans people are en masse being assaulted, raped, and killed because of the assumption theyre abusive? a character that parrots that idea with zero literary nuance or complexity might as well be written by someone on the alt-right. and the fandom NEEDS to realize that.

by Sirius; ; Report

to elaborate more actually; if someone wrote a misogynistic trans woman in a way that was actually well thought out, i would be one of the first people to support it. those identities CAN coexist. but trans fem jax doesnt SHOW they can coexist, she shows instead theyre one in the same. it still dumbed down cis male jax's plotline of being a male abuser, and it was lazy sympathy bait to sedate a rabidly queer audience. it took advantage of thir fanbases ideologies, and still fails on almost every CUSP of complexity it tried to write.

Genuinely it made me so upset that they just turned him trans to excuse him being a horrible person, i agree that i loved he was a good example of an abusive man and i think he shouldve stayed that way. But turning him trans just gave the alt-right another thing to point at and show how trans women are evil demons who hate cisgender women and i feel like gooseworx shouldve seen that from the start being a trans woman herself! as a transmasc i understand the need for representation and people cling onto jax just because shes a trans character but we shouldnt have the representation be horrible abusers who hate women!? Genuinely transfem jax has made me and my friends get into debates with people who only like jax because shes trans or 'YURIII'

EXACTLY!!! even if gooseworx DID want to write an intricate transfem character as abusive ( which with her history i doubt) jax just fails at that- we had zero idea about 'her' identity until episode five at the EARLIEST, and lets be real it's not until the last episode that anything can even wholly be considered as so-called 'evidence'. its just terribly written and its dissapointing that thats how the show turned out :/

by Sirius; ; Report

ikr i had such high hopes for it im dissapointed on how it turned into jax and friends and pomni is rarely talked about, ive genuinely wrote better and it sucks that she wrote it by herself cause it couldve been better with some critism

My trans friends don't like Jax either... I apologize if I say something wrong somewhere—I'm still reading through it—but I agree. I also noticed that the attitude toward Gengle seems like a projection of misogyny, because even her name—as we saw in the latest episode—is a crude joke by Jax, and no one even gave her a chance to choose a name that wasn’t offensive. She’s treated like a punching bag.

Besides, I believe more in Zuble. Their design matches their inner essence, while the character designs in the Circus reflect their personal struggles and experiences. It looks creative, interesting, and makes sense. But the rabbit… ???well, and the moral of the finale tied to her—personally, to me, it seems pretty toxic. It feels less like an explanation for bad behavior and more like an attempt to elicit pity and empathy for a person who openly insults and hates everyone, doesn’t care about them, and isn’t interested in them.

In short, the issue of transgender identity isn’t even as important to me as the narrative techniques that seem to be trying to manipulate me. I thought maybe I was coming across as a caveman or a transphobe for not connecting with or liking this portrayal, but I asked my trans friends and other friends, and they said it looks terrible to them, too.

Another thing that drives me crazy is that they could have spent the time they devoted to revealing such an important topic about her in the middle of the series—or at least dropped more hints and flashbacks—and then simply unveiled the mystery at the end, while spreading the rest of the story across Zubl, for example. I love Zubl.

I’m also writing this using a translator, so I apologize if there are any mistakes or if pronouns or names are used incorrectly. Besides, this is just my opinion, and you don’t have to agree with it. ._.
