lack of nuance in social media

ive been on social media since i was 8, about 10 years now. and one thing i can say for certain is that people online have such a black and white way of thinking.

i think a root cause is the fact that social media has desensitized many people to others feelings and emotions. online, we are hidden behind a level on anonymity to an extent. we dont have to worry about whether or not someone agrees with us, if we've offended somebody, or even if our claims are true. because at the end of the day we have the ability to block people, we have the ability to hide from criticism at any given moment once called out. as soon as you turn off your phone the issue is over.

i believe this plays a part in the lack of nuance many people online have. once you are free if criticism, you stop learning. along with this, humans at our core are very emotionally driven, and when the accountability of us reasoning with one another disappears, it often leads us with an opinion that is either one extreme or the other. simply because of the fact that we aren't accepting criticism. once we eliminate criticism, we eliminate nuance and understanding. theres a lack of depth in thought. thats why you see many people hop on the bandwagon of generalizing and misunderstanding, because they lack the depth to comprehend the situation further. whether that be bisexual women with boyfriends discourse, morality behind veganism and ai and the hypocrisy, the ussr, or basically just anything else. nothing is just black and white. the reason why black and white thinking is often spread by the masses is because social media tends to favor and reward simplistic positions, things that dont require much thought. as humans, we have to atleast have some level of intellectual humility to avoid being closed minded.

nowadays its so common to take someones in depth opinion and view it at surface level, because many people dont have the open minds to comprehend whats being said fully. its important to know that you can still agree with someone you disagree with and acknowledge when theyve made a fair argument. it is also important to acknowledge when people with the same opinion use a false argument. it doesnt automatically mean their opinion or statement is wrong, but it does mean that they should find factual evidence to back it
