Okkk, so I'm sure everybody under the sun has heard and/or seen the movie obsession. It's become a very popular movie, having a large 'fanbase' and 'fandom' due to its popularity. If u haven't, here's a synopsis:
After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic gets exactly what he asked for. However, he soon discovers that some desires come at a dark and sinister price. This is a movie that handles dark and complex themes. It explores themes of consent and sa. With that being said, this is kind of a rant about the media I'm seeing surround this 'fandom/fan base", and why its disturbing me.
I use twt for mostly wlw art and cat videos, and Tumblr as well as a blogging sites. On both of these, I have never looked up, or shown any interest in the movie. While I'm on twt, a nsfw clip pops up. Its caption has very sexually explicit comments about Nikki, the main character in the movie and the victim who had her bodily atomony ripped away from. Again, I'm on tumblr and nsfw fic pops up about Nikki, describing obscene kinks that she would be into.
Now, some might be asking what's the big deal, but to me, I find it incredibly weird that you are taking this movie about a women losing her bodily atomny and ability to consent and control her own life, and sexualizing her. There is nothing wrong with watching the movie and thinking shes attractive, but I feel for certain movies and the topics they disgust/ handle, we as a 'fan base' should not sexualize anybody in the movie. I feel odd and uncomfy reading a nsfw fic about smb from a movie and majority of the movie is her having no bodily atomony.
Let me know your opinions and if I'm low-key tripping

Obsession has had the same old phenomena that happens with all movies about cis hetero male culture, which is that the men that are directly the subject of its commentary completely miss the point and only identify with the satirical male protagonist that is supposed to be their parody. Same phenomena as American Psycho, Fight Club, and Breaking Bad.
Many of the guys who watched the movie basically *are* bear, and thus only really view Nikki as an object of desire and affection.
This is so completely true, and maybe I should have specified this in the post, but these were specifally in the wlw hashtag. And while you said is 100% true, I always felt that it was different for women because we are 'smarter' or have the experience to see these things, so to see other women objectify and sexulize her is incredibilty weird to me. And I think that I give women to much grace and I'm starting to realize the hard way that women are in fact not 'smarter' and fall into the trap that most women and girls fall into due to uneducation and misogny really.
