I've noticed a trend of people calling certain artist's music that they don't like "burger music", meaning that it's "basic" or "co-worker music". It's the same thing as calling something spiritually isreali. (Which ngl I found a few of those jokes funny at first, especially the bbno$ ones.) But there's this huuuge hate train towards an artist in the underground known as Slayr, who's a rapper that mixes his songs with a lot of influences of EDM. It's completely unjustified and genuinely gotten to a point where if you say you like his music you get dog piled on. (Also I'm sorry but imagining his music as being something that your average normal co-worker named John would listen to gen makes me giggle. Maybe if you worked at a Spencer's, sure.)
In my opinion, it kinda just shows how the industry treats black nerds. People shame the dude for literally no reason, other than "music sucks" (in their own personal music taste btw) "so that means it's okay to mock him/other people". At least with artists like bbno$ or Tx2 there's a solid grounds of both being controversial douches who manipulate their very blatantly young audiences. Whereas Slayr just kind of exists and suddenly everyone hates on him. Genuinely his music isn't even that bad. I actually really like a handful of his songs!!!!, he has decent lyricism, I really like his style, and the combo of expiremental shit and rap is unique.
Maybe this is just me looking too deep into stuff, but honestly it feels like anti-intellectualism and bean soup theory. Literally just "I don't like this thing and my opinion is the only one that matters so everyone else's opinions don't." Some people reallyyy need an ego check because not everything is about you. Other people have their music taste. Like I really don't like Imagine Dragons but I don't hate them nor their fans personally?? Like I'm a clikkie that used to be an AJR fan we are literal cousins.....
As for the anti-intellectualism thing, to me it feels like an actual genuine example of the next viral TikTok opinion dropping. Where people just blatantly go along with what everyone else is saying. I saw a video talk about how Slayr's treatment is probably because of how people tend to treat black nerds, and literally a chunk of the comments were "don't care, music bad." At this rate you're going out of your way to listen to it. If you don't like it, stop interacting with it!!!
Anyways, this is just a music rant. TikTok users are some of the dumbest and most illiterate types of people so I'm not really surprised.
YouTube's better anyways shh
