I've been taking pictures with the Gameboy Camera for about 5-6 years now.
In this blog post I'll post some of my favorites and in future blog posts I'll explain a bit about the tech.
The camera had amazing technology for the time it was released (1998). It uses a software technology called dithering which creates details from basically nothing. The pixels aren't there, but our brains fill in the missing parts. Here you can see a high tower with a lot of contrast on a sunny day. Shooting building towers is probably my favorite thing to do with this camera.
And while the canvas is really small (128x112px without the frame!), it's able to capture an atmosphere that is difficult to capture with any camera. Here you can see the silhouette of my friend against the sea.
The camera has something called edge detection, which is what makes contrasting subjects stand out, like in the previous picture, or in this next one. Here you can see a street lamp in Barcelona.
The pictures are colored in post, the basic palette is 4 shades of gray. Again, since the canvas is so small, our brains are doing most of the work here. Here a picture of an old mini I saw on the street.
Pictures are generally quite difficult to take, you need the perfect lightning conditions and, if using a lens, which is my case most of the time, a very steady pulse.
Users and photographers of this camera argue that the pictures are to be seen in a small format, which fits the original Gameboy screen. So here is a collage of some other of my favorite ones in a smaller size:

I knew about the camera, but I never looked up examples and THEY LOOK AMAZING, all the 90' vibes, like Apple Mackintosh's games!
They really look better than you might think for a resolution so small!! Some of these are taken with a lens, which helps get a focus, the three on the last row of the collage are without a focusing lens.

The photos are so charming, wow, especially the little ones, all gathered together. Such pictures have a certain vibe for me, they're cozy and nostalgic, maybe even dreamlike because of all the pixels. Also the gameboy camera is from 1998?? Wow, not that old, but still fascinating! Reminds me of old internet aesthetics etc.,. Anyway, thank you for this blog post! Very entertaining!
Not that there weren't available digital cameras in 1998, but I think it's quite an amazing feat of technology especially because it was considered a toy camera. There clearly was a lot of love put into designing it. It also has a record of being the smallest digital camera when it came out. Thank you for your nice comment
